Corruption and the aim to become a developed nation

President Ranil Wickremesinghe since assumed presidency, has over a period of time been promising us all, that by the year 2048, this country would have become a developed or first world country. Well and good, everyone of us is certain and back the president in his efforts to take this country out of the bankruptcy which we have been reduced to. Our president has also mentioned Singapore as a model of development. Unfortunately, corruption, the antithesis of development is rife in our country. Ordinary people face situations of corruption whenever they visit a government or semi-government body. Our department of motor traffic is one of them. Our law enforcement department works much faster when palms are oiled. News reports on daily basis lay bare the extent of corruption in the country. In like manner, ranking bureaucrats and politicians at the highest levels have been accused of demanding and receiving kickbacks. Many a potential investor has left our shores without investing, because of kickbacks demanded by top political leaders and bureaucrats. On two occasions, governments changed as a result of charges of corruption being brought against political leaders. The Central Bank scam of yesteryear is alleged to be the biggest scam perpetrated in the history of this country. One of the most popular presidents of this country has been accused of corruption on a mega scale, as has the president who had to flee office. Even today, at the backdrop of our country’s indebtedne...

'I dream of a corruption

A corruption-free India We should have a good government. Youngsters with basic educational qualifications should enter politics. We need more Abdul Kalams. We should have politicians who are not corrupt and who care for the people of India. I SANJAY KOTWANI Indians should have no black money. To achieve this, convert black money into white money. Bring in a strict law giving people a final chance to surrender their black money within a time frame. Recover 50% as tax. Strictly punish those who declare false assets. harsha I P VARDHAN We will be a super power by 2015 provided we change ourselves. We sing patriotic songs and hoist the National Flag but still consider ourselves to be Hindu, Muslim, Punjabi, Marathi, Bengali , etc. We are first Indians. When we can eat, play and fight at the border together , why can't we stand up together against terrorism and corruption? If we do this, then 2015 will be our year. I RAVI K SURI I dream of an India that will, by 2015, be honest, corruption free, with politicians and bureaucrats who work hard for people's welfare. The cancer of corruption has spread its tentacles to all walks of life, preventing this great country from becoming a prosperous, forward-looking developed nation. But all is not lost. The power of vote gives us the power to change. It is the sacred duty of every citizen to see that he casts his vote judiciously and elects leaders who are educated, honest and hardworking . I USHA G RAO Our country should be free from ...

CORRUPTION FREE INDIA TO BECOME A DEVELOPED NATION.

Corruption is a multifaceted devil, which has been a part of Indian culture for a long time and it has been so deeply ingrained that it has become difficult to root out. However, it should not be given a cold shoulder rather it should be analysed and eradicated to protect the country which is of the people, for the people and by the people. India’s democracy and corruption are a dichotomy when resource allocation is disturbed by transferring pockets for private use rather than turning India into a developed nation with taxpayers’ money for public use. Political aspects have peeped into this problem and have punished people who jump on the bandwagon of corruption. Rectification of tax evasion, legal actions for bribes and generating social awareness are yet to become valiant enough to enable citizens to secure and safeguard their rights and perform their duties unmitigatedly. Well, I consider developing India as a transferred epithet used to describe its citizen who in turn should be developed to make this piece of land prosper economically, socially and politically. As a seventeen-year-old when I think of corrupted India, government institutions and public departmental workings are rapport to me. Sometimes it contradicts this assumption through an interrogation that why is politics alone to be blamed when corruption is a part of every citizen’s cold blood. Yes, I have watched people on signals paying bribes to policemen for not wearing seat belts and I am inured with black...
