The improbable rise of the Croatian football team

Croatian coach Zlatko Dalic did not partake in the usual histrionics that follow an underdog victory. Rather, he looked on in stunned silence as Croatian celebrations erupted around him. He had masterminded yet another World Cup victory, arguably Croatia’s biggest scalp till date. About 10 minutes earlier, Dalic’s side looked on its way out of the World Cup on the back of a beautiful Neymar goal. Yet, in what has now become typical of his perennially underestimated team, Croatia fought back. Taking advantage of Brazil committing one too many players to attack in the dying minutes of a game — which they led (the trappings of Joga Bonito, some would say) — Croatia heroically committed men forward and restored parity. They had successfully taken the game to penalties and now the pressure of expectations was on Brazil. Also Read | As Brazil crumbled and Croatia unassumingly progressed to the semifinals, the enormity of the victory was such that even Dalic took time to register it. His stupor was followed by a proud smile, as he seemed to reflect upon his and his team’s journey over the last few years. And what a journey it has been. For a country with a population of around 39 lakh (about the same as that of Jaipur), reaching consecutive semifinals in a World Cup is an inimitable sporting feat. In 2018, Croatia made it all the way to the finals, only losing to the greatest French team in years. In 2022, they look to repeat that feat, as they play Argentina on December 13. As t...

Brazil looked to be labouring to an extra-time win over their stubborn opponents thanks to a moment of magic from forward Neymar, who wrote himself into Brazilian folklore by drawing level on 77 international goals with one of the nation's all-time greats Pele. Image: Neymar did not take a penalty in the shootout with Brazil missing two of their first four • • • • However, there was a late twist in the enchanting tale when Bruno Petkovic latched onto Mislav Orsic's cross, benefitting from a cruel Marquinhos deflection which wrong-footed Alisson, to net the latest equalising goal scored in a World Cup game, taking the quarter-final to penalties. Image: Bruno Petkovic celebrates after equalising for Croatia in extra-time Croatia, who needed two shootouts and an extra-time win to reach the final in 2018, kept their composure as Brazil's Marquinhos and Rodrygo failed to convert, while Nikola Vlasic, Lovro Ma...

World Cup 2022: Croatia 1

As the ball hit the foot of the woodwork and bounced away, Croatia's team sprinted to celebrate with their goalkeeper, while the Brazil players hit the turf, knowing their dream of a sixth crown had come to an end. After an engrossing 90 minutes, Tite's men thought they had won it in extra time when Neymar scored a thumping effort to equal Brazil's 'official' men's goalscoring record. But substitute Bruno Petkovic had other ideas, stroking in a 117th-minute equaliser with Croatia's first shot on target in the match to take the game to the nerve-shredding shootout. And it was the European side who emerged victorious once more, having done so by the same method against Japan in the last 16, to set up a semi-final meeting with the Netherlands or Argentina on Tuesday. • Neymar hints at Brazil retirement as coach Tite steps down • Brazil 'mourning' after Croatia end World Cup dream • Relive Croatia's win over Brazil Croatia show endurance to stun favourites This wasn't in the script. Brazil were supposed to dance through to the last four in their quest for another star on their shirt but their hopes were ended in the cruellest fashion. Neymar, who scored his 77th international goal to equal Pele's official mark, now shares a record recognised by Fifa but not the national team - as they also counted goals netted by their three-time World Cup winner in friendlies against club sides. And the Paris St-Germain forward will not get the opportunity to surpass the legend at this tourna...

FIFA World Cup 2022: Brazil Fans Back Home Shocked After World Cup Elimination

FIFA World Cup 2022: Brazil Fans Back Home Shocked After World Cup Elimination Brazil football fans were shocked into silence back home after the national team was eliminated by Croatia from the World Cup on Friday. • • • • • Brazil football fans react after their team's WC match against Croatia ended in a defeat. AP Brazil football fans were shocked into silence back home after the national team was eliminated by Croatia from the World Cup on Friday. The mood in Sao Paolo and Rio Janeiro was festive at first after Neymar put Brazil ahead in extra time. But then it quickly turned somber after the Croatians equalized and then won a penalty shootout in Qatar. Wearing a giant hat in Brazil's yellow and green colours, 34-year-old engineer Sergio Faria watched the match at a bar in downtown Sao Paulo. He said he was calm at kickoff, certain that Brazil and Argentina would face off in the semifinals. "It is the most awkward feeling. Croatia shot on goal once, Brazil wasted so many opportunities. It is the strangest Brazil elimination I remember," Faria said. "But I still don't understand why our coach Tite took Vinicius Junior for Antony, I don't know why Neymar was not the first to take a penalty in the shootout, I can't see why Brazil was not more aggressive." Rodrygo and Marquinhos missed their shots in the penalty shootout. Tite, who had already announced he would leave the job after six years as soon as Brazil's campaign in Qatar ended, said at a news conference that Neymar...

Croatia National Football Team Vs. Brazil National Football Team FIFA World Cup 2022 Lineups, Matches, Timelines

Korea 4-1  on Monday afternoon and advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. The national team returned to the pitch the following Friday to measure forces with Croatia, who left Japan behind. Croatia was Brazil’s last preparatory opponent for the 2018 World Cup. A few weeks before the Russian Cup, the team beat their rivals 2-0 at Anfield, with Neymar and Roberto Firmino scoring goals. Luck in the competition, however, was reversed: Canarinho fell in the quarterfinals, and Croatia was runner-up in the best campaign in the country’s history. CROATIA VS. BRAZIL IN THE QUARTERFINALS 👀🍿 Croatia National Football Team How to counter Brazil, and is it time to refresh the strike team? This is the question coach Dalić is facing ahead of the clash with Brazil in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup. Whether everyone will be able to recover energetically is a big question. Against Brazil, you have to have the readiest players on the field. There is no place for the half- or partially recovered. If you start against Selaca with insufficient preparation, you have already lost. The Flames must not enter into an open rally with the Brazilians and must not engage in chasing around the field. This is where the Selecao is the strongest and punishes mercilessly. It is also clear that they must not crawl into Livaković’s lap and play a total bunker. Switzerland has set some tactical patterns that can limit the Brazilians, but it is difficult to beat them if the attac...
