Cubbon Park is a beautifully maintained 120-hectare garden where all the local residents of the city take a break. A landmark ‘lung’ area of Bengaluru, the gardens are dotted with a lot of colonial heritage and charm, which are today a part of the state capital’s political centre. Lokayukta slaps notices on 4 over sewage in Cubbon Park

BENGALURU: Acting suo motu on reports of sewage overflowing inside Cubbon Park, Lokayukta last week issued notices to the deputy director, horticulture (Cubbon Park) and three others, including executive engineer, BWSSB (south west-1 division), directing them to submit their comments/reports on the incident within four weeks. The two other respondents are executive engineer, BWSSB (central office) and assistant executive engineer, BWSSB (central office). "The government is spending crores of rupees on the development of Cubbon Park, but the very purpose of spending the amount is not met. For the development of Bal Bhavan, several works have been taken up at a cost of Rs 24 crore, but the drainage water problem is not yet resolved. Officials of horticulture department were given complaints on the issue but no steps were taken to resolve it," the Lokayukta's order dated June 3 read. "Every citizen who lives within the municipal area or a local body has a right to have proper roads, underground drainage and well-maintained parks. This is a part of fundamental right guaranteed under Article 21 of Constitution of India," it added.
