By the 1930s, this obligation would eventually be shortened to: This note is a legal tender at its face value for all debts public and private They were originally issued directly into circulation by the United States Notes that were issued in the Existing United States Notes remain valid currency in the United States; however, as no United States Notes have been issued since January 1971, they are increasingly rare in circulation and command higher prices than face value as items of History [ ] During 1861, the first year of the American Civil War, the expenses incurred by the Union Government much exceeded its limited revenues from taxation, and borrowing was the main vehicle for financing the war. The Act of July 17, 1861 The Legal Tender Acts [ ] The beginning of 1862 found the Union's expenses increasing, and the government was having trouble funding the escalating war. U.S. Demand Notes—which were used, among other things, to pay Union soldiers—were unredeemable, and the value of the notes began to deteriorate. Infographic: How Many U.S. Dollar Bills Are There in Circulation?

How Many U.S. Dollar Bills Are There in Circulation? When you think about it, the journey of each individual currency note is pretty incredible. After being printed or minted, each bill is then passed between people and businesses to facilitate transactions. If it’s a $1 or $5 bill, it changes hands on average about 110 times per year – and if it’s a $20 bill, it’s more like 75. The interesting part is that almost every transaction is linked to the one before it, and the series of subsequent transactions for each bill creates a unique, broad story. By the time a bill is retired, it would have facilitated many hundreds of transactions that enabled everything from the purchase of used cars to the shadier deals in underground markets. It’s a pretty interesting tale for such a little piece of paper. Dollar Bills, in Aggregate Today’s infographic from In total, there is a total of about $1.5 trillion in U.S. physical currency in circulation, and roughly 80% of this value comes from the 11.5 billion $100 notes that are in circulation. Note Number of bills in circulation $1 bill 11.7 billion $2 bill 1.2 billion $5 bill 2.8 billion $10 bill 1.9 billion $20 bill 8.9 billion $50 bill 1.7 billion $100 bill 11.5 billion Of course, as we showed in Turnover Per Bill Every year, the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing is responsible for printing new dollars – and interestingly, 70% of these new bills are used to replace older notes going out of circulation. That raises the question: ho...

2021 Federal Reserve Order for Banknotes is Ranged by Denomination

Unlike in past years, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System order for banknotes in FY 2021 is ranged by denomination The pace of U.S. currency production will quicken in 2021, possibly to the highest level in at least 15 years, according to a Federal Reserve order submitted to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing ( Unlike in past years, the order submitted includes ranges of notes by denomination instead of specific amounts, with the overall production total for FY 2021 placed between 7.5 and 9.6 billion notes. This change from the past is attributed to COVID-19. "To better address possible shifts in note demand and note production due to the pandemic, the FY 2021 print order is … a range by denomination. During FY 2021, Board and BEP staff will adjust production of each denomination within these ranges to best match available production with demand throughout the year," the currency print order stated. The figures come from a print order approved and submitted by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, the issuing authority for U.S. banknotes. It reflects the board’s estimate of net demand for currency in FY 2021 from both domestic and international customers. In April, the Board revised its FY 2020 order from 5.2 billion to 6.2 billion notes to meet increased demand for currency because of the pandemic. The order was revised again in August to 5.8 billion notes with an improved blend of denominations after collaborating with the BEP. Unchanged from ...
