Chief Justice of India 2022:Justice Uday U Lalit is set to become the 49th Chief Justice of India. The Chief Justice of India NV Ramana recommended Justice UU Lalit's name as his successor on August 4, 2022. The current Chief Justice of India NV Ramana is scheduled to retire on August 27, 2022.The new Chief Justice of India will have a short tenure of lesser than three months. He will be the only second judge after Justice SM Sikri (CJI from 1971-1973) to be elevated from the bar to the post of the Chief Justice of India. Justice UU Lalit was appointed a judge in the Supreme Court of India in August 2014. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana today recommends Justice UU Lalit's name as his successor. NV Ramana: Justice NV Ramana appointed next Chief Justice Of India

Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana will be the next Chief Justice of India. He will take over from CJI Ramana is first generation lawyer from an agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh. A PIB release said that he was an avid reader, literature enthusiast and a man passionate about Carnatic music. He joined the bar in 1983, specialising in constitutional, civil and labour laws. Justice Ramana was made a permanent judge of the Andhra High Court in 2000 and was acting chief justice of it for some time. He was elevated to the SC in 2014. He espoused social causes first as a student leader and later on as a journalist, lawyer and a judge. He was a journalist in a leading Telugu daily before becoming a lawyer. In his recent public speeches, he recounted how he escaped police arrest during Emergency and spoke about the rights of the dispossessed such as migrant workers. As a judge, he balanced crucial rights such as security with rights of people to exercise their right to free speech and expression through internet. He did not strike down executive orders banning internet in Kashmir but ordered a review of the decisions. He also asked the government to pass reasoned orders banning internet only in limited areas so that the ordinary public were not inconvenienced. His judgements have shown empathy to the ordinary citizen but have been intolerant to criminalisation of politics and horse-trading.
