Lyrics for Darling Nikki by Prince

I knew a girl named Nikki I guess you could say she was a sex fiend I met her in a hotel lobby Masturbating with a magazine She said, "How'd you like to waste some time?" And I could not resist when I saw little Nikki grind She took me to her castle And I just couldn't believe my eyes She had so many devices Everything that money could buy She said, "Sign your name on the dotted line" The lights went out And Nikki started to grind Uh, Nikki The castle started spinning Or maybe it was my brain I can't tell you what she did to me But my body will never be the same Oh, her lovin' will kick your behind Oh, she'll show you no mercy But she'll sho'nuff, sho'nuff show you how to grind Darlin' Nikki, oh Woke up the next morning Nikki wasn't there I looked all over and all I found Was a phone number on the stairs It said, "Thank you for a funky time Call me up whenever you want to grind" Oh, Nikki, oh, oh Oh, come back Nikki, come back Your dirty little prince Wanna grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind Noos gnimoc, gnimoc, noos gnimoc si droL eht tahT Wonk I esuac' enif m'I ?Uoy era woh, olleH Writer/s: Prince Rogers Nelson Publisher: Universal Music Publishing Group Lyrics licensed and provided by send your comment Comments: 33 • Speedwell from EireNikki, an ancient and well-known nickname (pun intended) for the Devil is "Old Nick". Darling Nikki by Prince

This song is about a sexual encounter with Nikki, a sex fiend the singer encounters in a hotel lobby "masturbating with a magazine." Prince released many songs that deal explicitly with sex, but many of them went unnoticed because they were not released as singles. This one got more attention because the album was so popular. • When Tipper Gore (wife of former US vice-president Al Gore) heard her 11-year-old daughter listening to this song, she became outraged and started the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) to fight against songs with offensive lyrics. Led by the wives of US politicians, the PMRC got hearings on the issue where musicians like Frank Zappa, The controversy did lead to a voluntary system where record labels put warning stickers on albums containing explicit content. In 1991, when Walmart announced they would not sell any albums with warning stickers, many artists began releasing both clean and explicit versions of their albums. • At the very end of the song, it sounds as if there is a choir singing a bizarre, foreign language in almost a "jazz-scat meets gospel" style. Prince used a technique called backmasking to record this section. Played forwards, it just sounds merely like a strange gospel chorale. Played backwards, the choir is singing, "Hello! How are you? I'm fine, 'Cuz I know that the lord is coming soon... Coming, coming soon!" It is a very clear example of intentional backmasking. You can verify this using a computer containing software that c...

In the film Purple Rain, the song is directed toward Apollonia Kotero's character when she decides to work with Prince's character's rival, played by Morris Day. Near the end of the song, the music stops into the sound of rain and wind. There is singing, but played in reverse. Nicki was rather pessimist about if she would ever get the chance to do a collaboration with Queen Bey during her mixtape era, about this she told in an interview with Billboard: “(…)I thought it would never happen ‘cause I felt like if she was going to ask me, she would have asked.” Finally, in June 2014, stars aligned and Gee Roberson contacted Nicki to tell her that Beyoncé wanted the Trinidian rapper to remix Flawless. The Real Meaning Behind Prince's 'Darling Nikki'

In short, "Darling Nikki" was an ode to a presumably fictional character whom Prince described as a "sex fiend." In the opening lyrics of the song, Prince goes on to explain that he met the woman while she "was masturbating to a magazine." Later in the song, he references going back to her "castle" chock-full of "devices" and how after exchanging pleasantries they started to "grind." Cue the backlash. Perhaps there was no one more bothered by the sexually explicit lyrics than famous "The vulgar lyrics embarrassed both of us. At first, I was stunned, but then I got mad," she penned about the awkward moment. "Millions of Americans were buying Purple Rain with no idea what to expect. Thousands of parents were giving the album to their children — many even younger than my daughter," she continued. In an effort to avoid a repeat of that moment, Gore, along with many other powerful women in the political arena, organized a group titled Parents Music Resource Center — much to the music industry's dismay. Many musician's spoke out about censorship and government regulation of the industry and the negative impact it would have on the industry. Alas, eventually the music industry conceded and opted to label music that contained explicit language and content.
