Darlings Movie Review: Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Verma's performances barely hold together this one

Darlings Movie Review: Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Verma's performances barely hold together this one-tone drama Darlings was touted to be a dark comedy. Even though the film's subject is promising, the storyline is not layered enough and neither is the humour on point. Instead, the performances become the saving grace. Darlings is streaming on Netflix now Photo:INDIA TV • Movie Name: Darlings • Critics Rating: 2 / 5 • Release Date: AUG 5 • Director: Jasmeet K Reen • Genre: Dark comedy Darlings Movie Review: Netflix's latest Hindi film offering is Darlings. It is based on the sensitive issue of domestic violence and how women get sucked into the spiral of abuse and struggle to find a way out of it. Alia Bhatt as Badrunissa and Vijay Verma as Hamza star as the couple-in-love whose marriage after three years is devoid of any joy or affection. Hamza is an alcoholic and in moments of rage, which he blames on his drinking habit, torments and hurts his wife. Shefali Shah plays Badrunissa's mother Shamshunissa who keeps reminding her that the cycle of violence will not end until drastic steps are taken. What unfolds in the trio's lives, which are intertwined, is the story of Darlings. First off, the movie's subject is strong and for the most part, the portrayal of domestic violence hits the right notes. Director Jasmeet K Reen smacks the hammer on the nail right from the start and jumps to the centre point of the story within minutes. We get a hint of what will follow and the...

‘Darlings’: An Unflinching

Badru’s (Alia Bhatt) love for Hamza (Vijay Varma) is like a clear blue sky: comforting, constant, omnipresent. His presence for her is like a foreboding dark cloud: frustrating, obstructive, unpredictable. Their marriage seems like a play of light and dark. One moment, a smiling Hamza is eating dinner; the other, he’s throttling her. The next morning, he’s hugging her. This pattern of love and abuse has recurred for years. Each night: dark clouds; each morning: blue sky. As the mornings get shorter, and the nights get longer, Badru starts getting more and more hungry, craving something impossible: dignity. A new Netflix release, Darlings, interrogates domestic abuse in such unflinching detail that it feels both disturbing and triggering. It’s not all gloom though. Badru’s mother, Shamshu (Shefali Shah), whose husband died many years ago, has seen so much horror in her life that she’s only left with humour. She is Badru’s buddy, bulwark, and mentor, giving her life lessons, ribbing her, even comically suggesting she bump Hamza off. Then there’s Zulfi (Roshan Mathew), their friend and neighbour, a shady salesman who wants to be a screenwriter – a man who is everything that Hamza is not: sweet, amiable, teetotaler. But in the conservative cash-strapped world of Badru and Shamshu – always bubbling with plans and desires – the most playful bits come from an unlikely source: English. Comfortable in Urdu, the mother-daughter duo doesn’t speak the language as much as caress and sh...

'Darlings' movie review: Alia Bhatt lights up this dark comedy

Express News Service Darlings have a cast to kill for. Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma and Roshan Mathew headline this seductive black comedy set in Mumbai. But that’s just the start. Equally fascinating, at least to me, are the supporting players who populate the world of this film. Vijay Maurya, Rajesh Sharma, Puja Swarup, Kiran Karmarkar and Ajit Kelkar turn up in minor parts and make them memorable. Even in unimportant scenes, your eye is never bored. Darlings is a reminder that, though Hindi cinema may be having a generally drab year, it’s not for a lack of human resources. The film opens with a short, smart prologue. Badrunissa (Alia Bhatt) rushes to a movie date with her boyfriend, Hamza (Vijay Varma). She waits and waits, missing the show. He turns up late, bearing a teddy bear and apologizing. “Government job leke aya (I found a government job),” he tells her. “Let’s get married.” Badru brightens up, hugging him. The couple looks happy though we already know what’s coming. It’s also notable, I think, that the scene unfolds outside a famous multiplex in Mumbai. Having missed a film, Badru’s life proceeds to get decidedly un-filmy. My first film as a producer!!! So excited nervous thrilled emotional to share it with you!!!! DARLINGS TRAILER OUT NOW! — Alia Bhatt (@aliaa08) When we meet her next, Badru is three years into an abusive marriage. Hamza, a jerk and an alcoholic, routinely hits his wife, triggered by anything from slips in her cooking to a genuine co...

Darlings movie review: Alia Bhatt brings out her quirky best in this dark comedy

The husband is an alcoholic who holds no remorse for assaulting his wife every night, the wife is head over heels in love with the man and doesn't mind cooking breakfast — the staple bun omelette — every morning for him with bruises all over — this may be a regular occurrence in many Indian households, but rarely gets talked about the way it should. Picking a subject like domestic violence for a dark comedy isn't ideal, but Darlings, starring (Also read: 'Gauri Khan doesn't like anything', says Alia Bhatt, shares her review of Darlings ) Darlings movie review: Alia Bhatt and Shefali Shah in a still from Darlings. Badrunissa Shaikh aka Badru (Bhatt) is smitten by roadside romeo Hamza Shaikh (Vijay Varma), and marries him as soon as he secures himself a government job. Cut to three years later and life after marriage, we see Bhatt getting beaten up every night for a new reason every time. Sometimes it's a kankar in the food, sometimes just because she sat in a colony meeting without the husband's consent. And once because he thinks she's having an affair. The intensity of abuse gets disturbing and more intense with each day, until one day when Badru decides to stand up and take charge. From that point, Darlings shows how a middle-class mother-daughter duo (Shah and Bhatt), who is caught in their own circumstantial hang-ups, gradually discovers their inner strength to survive in a city like Mumbai, battling all odds. With a runtime of two hours 14 minutes, the film is well-pa...

Darlings Film Review: A Dark Comedy That Explores Why Women Stay In Abusive Marriages

Trigger warning: Mentions of domestic abuse and intimate partner violence “ Darlings”, directed by debutante Jasmeet K Reen, starring Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, and Vijay Varma in lead roles, is a dark comedy that revolves around an abusive marriage and how a mother-daughter duo navigates through it. In many aspects, Darlings is quite a refreshing watch – be it the intersectional space the protagonists belong to, the witty exchanges between a worldly-wise mother and a rosy-eyed daughter, and the excellent performances by the cast that stay true to the genre. Darlings introduces us to two women – Badrunissa Shaikh (Badru) and Shamshunnisa Anzari (Shamshu) played by Alia Bhatt and Shefali Shah respectively. Badru lives with her government employee husband Hamza Shaikh (Vijay Varma), who beats her up night after night, for whatever trivial reason that angers him. The following day he would promptly try and make up with Badru by pinning his anger and abuse on his alcoholism, with proclamations of love. In the same chawl as Badru and Hamza, lives Shamshu, Badru’s mother – a feisty, independent, single woman trying to set up a Dabba business with the help of her friend Zulfi (Roshan Mathew). Shamshu, unlike Badru, sees right through the kind of man Hamza is and keeps asking her daughter to leave the abusive marriage. But Badru sticks on, with an unshakable conviction in her husband’s ‘ love’, hoping that she can fix amza and his ways. Why do women stay in abusive marriages? More ...

Darlings Review: Watchable All The Way With Fine Performances From Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah 3 stars

Restraint and simplicity mark Darlings, which tells the story of a volatile marriage steeped in neo-noir devices. A tale of marital discord assumes the form of a revenge drama shot through with quirky humour and delivered with a dash of provocation. An abusive husband, a wife who lives in hope and the latter's far less forgiving mother are the three principal characters in Darlings, Jasmeet K. Reen's directorial debut. The violence-prone man does not recognise his transgressions as something than cannot be pardoned. The victim of domestic violence, too, seems reconciled to her fate. It is only the older woman, aware of how such noxious relationships usually turn out, who is of the firm belief that the errant deserves to be put in his place. The drama that the divergence between mother and daughter yields is muted and when revenge is planned and put into practice it isn't governed by the conventions of the genre. That the Netflix film set in a lower middle-class Muslim-dominated neighbourhood in Mumbai wants to break the mould is made clear in the love song that it opens with - Pleaj (with lyrics by Gulzar), which captures the milieu and spirit of the story to absolute perfection. Darlings places all its cards on the table with unequivocal clarity but shuffles them in a manner that makes wrapping one's head around what they add up to somewhat challenging. Because Darlings does not play out along the predictable lines of a revenge drama, it has no dramatic flourishes of the ...
