B.R. Ambedkar biography

B.R. Ambedkar biography Dr B.R. Ambedkar (1891 – 1956) B.R. Ambedkar “Babasaheb” was an Indian political reformer who campaigned for the rights of the ‘untouchable’ caste of India. He played a role in the Indian independence movement and also played a key role in drafting the Indian constitution and the reformation of Indian society through the promotion of greater equality and rights for both the poor and women. Ambedkar was also a prolific scholar, attending university in Mumbai, New York and London; he specialised in law, economics and political science, and made contributions to Indian economic thought. In 1956, shortly before his death, he converted from Hinduism to Buddhism encouraging many fellow ‘untouchables’ to also convert. Early life Ambedkar was born in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. He was the 14th child of Ramji Sakpal who was a Subedar (officer) in the British Indian Army. His family were ranked as a Mahar (Dalit) ‘untouchable’ caste. At the time of his birth, those born in the Mahar caste were subject to great discrimination, with limited education and employment prospects. They were not allowed to share public water provision and often suffered very low standards of living, health and poor accommodation. The Mahars are mainly found in Maharashtra and comprise around 10% of the population. However, as an officer in the British Indian army, his father lobbied for his children to be allowed to go to school. Ambedkar was allowed to attend, but because of great opposit...

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar: His Vision For India Of 21st Century – OpEd – Eurasia Review

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of all countrymen paid rich tribute Dr B R Ambedjkar by recalling his legacy through a tweet video, “A humble tribute to Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar on his birth anniversary from all the countrymen.” The Indian President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted by saying, “Tributes to Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar on his birth anniversary. Our nation’s icon and Chief Architect of the Constitution, he strived for a society based on justice and equity. Let us all take inspiration from his vision and values, and resolve to imbibe his ideals in our lives.” Given Baba Saheb’s contribution in many fields such politics, society, economy, education, law, administration, nation-building, planning etc., he was one of scintillating personalities. But on the contrary, he was also one of the people, who was the most misunderstood one. Most of the people confined Dr. Ambedkar to only the SCs and STs messiah. But he had worked and contributed not only towards the upliftment only of these people, rather gave his exceptional contributions to the politics, sociology, and economics etc. Remembering the role of Ambedkar in economics, Nobel laureate Dr. Amartya Sen paid generous tribute to him as, “Ambedkar is my father in economics. He is a truly celebrated champion of the underprivileged. He deserves more than what he has achieved today. However, he was a highly controversial figure in his home country, though it was not the reality. His… contribution in the field of eco...

Dr Ambedkar

Great Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was not only the maker of the Indian Constitution but was also the visionary architect of India’s labor law reforms. He was the savior of the Indian labor, and not a mere Dalit leader. Many of the important labor law initiatives in India were made by Dr Ambedkar himself, being the first Labor Minister of India in the Viceroy’s Executive Council during the four years from 1942 to 1946. Those four years can be termed as the golden period of Indian labor. After completing his studies with flying colors from Columbia University and London School of Economics, he returned to India and became Professor and Principal of the Government Law College in Bombay. But for ten years the ‘untouchable’ Barrister and Professor could not get sufficient place to reside and had to live in one of the ‘chawls’ of Bombay Development Department at Parel meant for the lowest level of workers. Each floor was having a single lavatory and single tap for bathing, washing and cleaning cooking utensils. Most of the tenants were mill workers. Living under these conditions, the professor acquired a first-hand experience about the hardships in the lives of the workers. He had occasions to visit some of the mills and see how the workers were working there. This has created a passion in him to work for the welfare of workers. He thus gained the confidence of many workers and rose to their leadership. This life experience created the background for him to become India’s architec...
