Since 1980, the Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center has served as an urban extension of the Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design. Located in historic Alexandria, VA, less than eight miles from Washington, DC, the WAAC offers a unique professional learning environment with an interdisciplinary, international, individual focus. Our pedagogy emphasizes freedom and responsibility as partners in ethical design practice. Students have the freedom to choose their own studio and thesis projects, then take on the responsibility to realize those projects. We inspire students to chart their own career paths and become the architects or urban designers they want to become.

Laurie Baker Legacy

‘In 1963 the Bakers moved to Kerala, Elizabeth Baker's homeland. Laurie happened to meet a Belgian monk Francis who followed the Hindu way of monasticism and had started an ashram at Kurisumala in a place called Wagamon in the Kottayam/Idukki border. When Laurie told him about their work in the Himalayas Acharya Francis convinced Laurie to come stay in Wagamon since the tribal people and poor displaced people here had no medical facilities at all. Both in Pithoragarh and Wagamon, the Bakers started a hospital and several schools. These were opportunities for Laurie to build. The unique and extreme climatic conditions and topographical challenges of the Himalayas and the remote densely wooded hills of South India meant Laurie had to use his ingenuity and skills to utmost’. About Us

Dominic Chacko Kizhakemuri (DC) a writer, intellectual, freedom fighter and entrepreneur was the founder of DC Books. DC started his illustrious career as a teacher before entering the publishing business. He has singlehandedly created the biggest revolution in the Indian publishing industry with the formation of DC Books in 1974. Taking forward the keen intellectual pursuits of DC, the institution was set up in 2002 which revolutionized education in Kerala.

Interior Architecture

Students learn about habitable environments ranging from small, basic residential interiors to larger, more complex commercial and institutional spaces. With projects focusing on current design issues as well as lectures and visits from professionalsto enhance assignments, the curriculum is a carefully sequenced series of courses building on theoretical, technical, and creative competencies. Because of the program’s location in Washington D.C., students benefit from viewing exhibitions at the National Building Museum, pursuing research at the Library of Congress, attending trade shows such as NeoCon East, listening to lectures offered by the Washington Design Center and visiting such organizations asthe United States Green Building Council. Taking advantage of these offerings moves learning outside the classroom and into the industry with practicing professionals in interior design. The program is for candidates who have completed undergraduate work at an accredited institution in an area of study other than interior design or a related field, such as architecture.
