What is mental health and mental wellbeing?

Last week I attended Mind’smental health awareness training(many thanks to Alex from Hammersmith and Fulham Mind for an excellent day). The training covered a wide range of topics from what is mental health to What exactly we do we mean when we say good mental health? What does mental wellbeing actually mean? I think we can all agree that it is a state of mind, what we feel and think, but more than that... The "Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder. It is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community." That’s a pretty tall order. Who defines what the normal stresses are anyway? Daily life would be more accurate. I would also hope that work includes more than just your job – hobbies, passions, chores, etc. Mind's booklet on "You care about yourself and you care for yourself. You love yourself, not hate yourself. You look after your physical health – eat well, sleep well, exercise and enjoy yourself. You see yourself as being a valuable person in your own right. You don't have to earn the right to exist. You exist, so you have the right to exist. You judge yourself on reasonable standards. You don't set yourself impossible goals, such as 'I have to be perfect in everything I do', and then punish yourself when you don't reach those goals." That sounds more realistic, if no...

Maday Alicia Coronel-Santos 1 * and Juan Carlos Rodríguez-Macías 2 • 1School of Humanities and Education, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico • 2Institute of Research and Educational Development, University of Baja California, Ensenada, Mexico Global society presents a mental health scenario characterized by the prevalence of mental disorders and the limited existence of formal care services. Faced with such a context, it is necessary to review what is understood and done in favor of mental health. This implies, in the first instance, analyzing the concept of mental health from a comprehensive approach that takes into account different perspectives from the social and natural sciences, related factors, and care options. Therefore, the present work aimed to propose an integral definition and a conceptual model of mental health based on the Systematic Literature Review, with the PRISMA approach, of the theoretical frameworks of 52 articles related to mental health published up to February 2022. A qualitative approach was used, with a Grounded Theory design, which allowed comparing different paradigms and identifying gaps in conceptual notions to build an explanatory model of mental health. The results showed three dominant paradigms that circumscribe the concept of mental health. Mental health is understood as the absence of illness, positive mental health, and a state of equilibrium. In addition, the need to propose a definition that integrates these dominant paradi...
