NEW DELHI:Strong earthquake tremors were felt inDelhi-NCR and parts of North India on Tuesday. The earthquake, which struck around 1:30 PM, lasted for a few seconds only. The National Centre for Seismology said that a 5.4 magnitude earthquake jolted Doda in Jammu and Kashmir, triggering strong tremors across north India. The earthquake tremors were felt in Chandigarh, Jaipur, Jammu and Kashmir and other surrounding regions. According to initial reports, earthquake tremors were so strong that they were felt in faraway places like Islamabad, Lahore and adjoining areas in Pakistan. Panic-stricken people took to Twitter to share the update and posted memes recalling the numerous such incidents in the recent past. According to European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, (EMSC), an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale occurred 30km southeast of Kishtwar in Jammu & Kashmir. The tremors were felt for almost 20 seconds. According to reports, earthquake tremors were felt in Mandi, Kullu, and Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh. Tremors were felt in Pakistan's Lahore too. Dr OP Mishra, Director, National Center for Seismology said, "An earthquake of 5.4 magnitude was recorded in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda today. Tremors might have been felt in HP, Chandigarh, Punjab and all adjoining areas. Maybe the aftershock will be of lesser magnitude than the main shock." The earthquake struck at a depth of 6 kilometres, the NCS said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property. A local from Srinagar said, "The earthquake scared school children. People in shops rushed out. It was scary. This was more intense than the tremors last week..."
