Dhaad

Storyline The film is situated in the late 1950s of the interior rural landscape of Kachchh district of Gujarat, India on the western border of Pakistan. It is the story of an impotent man Ghelo (Kay Kay Menon) who is in search of a child for himself, and water for his land. Ghelo lives off of looting people by conducting raids during the dark hours in the surrounding villages. His three wives Monghi (Nandita Das), Dhanbai (Sujata Mehta), and Ratni (Sameera Avasthi) fail to deliver a child as the rains fail to soak the dry and arid terrain of the rocky lands of his native village. In his endeavor to prove his conviction that the rich and powerful (the landlord and the state) can only be contained by asserting power over them, Ghelo struggles through his life without love from his kin and without the support of his friends. Finally, out of desperation, he forcibly involves his newly made friend Pranjivan (Sandeep Kulkarni) in the raid (dhaad) of a wealthy landlord. The landlord's (Bhim Vakani) ...

Drama centred around a dacoit named Ghela who believes in the power of the gun and regards it as a necessary tool for survival. Disclaimer: Dhaad is a movie I have worked on as my first ever movie stint so please take my entire review with grain of Kachchhi salt. The story of this movie is set in the mid-late 1950s of Kachchh. It captures the beauty and vibrancy of the terrain and cultural heritage of Kachchh with the language, costume, and music. The lead actors Kay Kay Menon, Nandita Das, Sandeep Kulkarni do a great justice to their roles. Especially Kay Kay who played Ghelo, an anti-hero character with complex personality, has done a great job. The movie however lacks on many technical aspects such as quality of visuals and sounds but that is because this movie was made on a very small budget and had gone through many financial difficulties that it took more than 17 years for it to get released once the shooting was completed (December 2000). Having said that, the movie still captures the beauty and innocence of the rural lives of Kachchh that is only available to through the visuals of this movie. After 2001 earthquake Kachchh district has gone through a massive transformation that has changed the coastal and rural la...

Dahaad Review: Sonakshi Sinha, Gulshan Devaiah, Vijay Varma's thriller is hard

By Anindita Mukherjee: It’s not every day that you see a woman cop, riding a bullet and kicking it (quite literally), at a taekwondo class. That’s Sonakshi Sinha in a nutshell from Amazon Prime Video’s latest series, Dahaad. Women as protagonists in cop thrillers aren’t too new a phenomenon in the world of entertainment. So, what is it that is different about Dahaad? And not to forget, the near-perfect amalgamation of top male performers in the country in the form of Gulshan Devaiah, Vijay Varma andSohum Shah that strikes the perfect equilibrium. Let’s find out more from our review. Anjali Bhaati (played by Sonakshi Sinha) is a top performer in her taekwondo class. She is sassy, unapologetic and rides a bullet to work. She is a reliable cop and stands out at a workplace predominant with men. Like every middle class story, her mother is after her life to get her to meet potential matches but she turns deaf ear. Anjali doesn’t believe in bribes, is ready to beat men who pass lewd comments and doesn’t believe in bowing down. Basically, the ideal cop everyone sitting in the audience wish for. She is given the task of unravelling a mystery surrounding multiple women being found dead in public toilets. While the deaths appear as suicide, little digging and it comes about that all the dots connect to one direction – a pyscho serial killer. What follows next is an exhilarating cat-and-mouse chase involving police and the attacker. The story of Dahaad is a reflection of all things ...
