'Ditto': A History

Stop us if you've heard it all before. That's right: the history of the word ditto starts with Italian: some early 17th century English speakers noticed that in Italian, ditto or detto was used to refer to a thing mentioned previously. The Italians had cultivated ditto/detto themselves, with its origins lying ultimately in Latin dicere, meaning "to say," but English speakers were happy to claim it for their own. So great was the obvious utility of ditto, in fact, that English speakers put the word to use in ways the Italians had not thought to do. Adjectival use quickly followed the adoption of the noun use, and by the second decade of the 18th century, ditto was also functioning in English as an adverb and as a verb. Noun use (arguably more accurately characterized as pronoun use) dominated, with the English word first functioning mostly in the mundane texts of inventories and invoices, as well as in dry scientific observances like those E. Donovan made in his 1795 The Natural History of British Insects, with the subject of a first illustration being identified as "the natural size of the larva, with its manner of feeding," and the second as "magnified appearance of the upperside of ditto." But in the 19th century ditto sauntered into popular fiction and settled down for a nice visit: Mr. Thomas Potter, then, was a clerk in the city, and Mr. Robert Smithers was a ditto in the same; their incomes were limited, but their friendship was unbounded. They lived in the same stre...

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: How to catch Ditto

Ditto is one of the most useful Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet because it can breed with most Pokémon in the Dex. However, the sneaky little blob is harder to find in Gen 9 than he has been in previous Pokémon games. We'll go over where to find it, how to catch it, and how to use the Masuda Method with it. (Image credit: iMore) To find Ditto, you'll need to enter battles with every Pokémon you see in Ditto's habitat and hope the creature turns out to be the purple blob. If it is, it will change to Ditto immediately after a battle starts. The name that appears above its head during battles will always be "Ditto" and not the Pokémon it's impersonating. Additionally, if you know for a fact that you've already added a certain Pokémon to your Dex, but "???" is appearing above its head in the wild, then you know it's a Ditto. For example, I had already caught a Murkrow, but then I saw one with question marks above its head, which meant it was actually the purple blob in disguise. Breeding Ditto with the Masuda Method (Image credit: The Pokémon Company ) As mentioned previously, Ditto can breed with most Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, so you'll want to have it in your party when you go picnicking. To ensure that a specific Pokémon Egg appears, just have Ditto and the Pokémon you want to breed in your party and place the others in boxes for now. Then wait a while and Eggs will start appearing in the picnic basket. Your odds of breeding Hiding as other Pokémon Ditto is a sneaky Poké...

The UI is minimalistic, highly adjustable, and it looks remarkable with a Dracula theme. Out of all the features, I mostly value the ability to assign keyboard shortcuts for different groups. There still are bugs that I can find, but I am doing my best to report all of them. Awesome, I suggest to the devolpers to make when holding Shift and pressing with the mouse a double click on a clipboard history item, because of the shift, make it paste as plain text, and write this in the info about the program so ...

Ditto raises $45M to help companies keep their data in sync

Many apps today assume that data lives in only one location, typically a single cloud database. But the reality is more complex. Thanks to the proliferation of mobile devices and cloud infrastructure — the latter of which accelerated during the pandemic — apps now need to store and process data in more places, from the edge to the public cloud. That’s what drove Adam Fish and Max Alexander to found “The pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in traditional network infrastructure, prompting a surge in demand for contactless solutions,” Fish, who serves as the company’s CEO, told TechCrunch in an email interview. “Businesses scrambled to transition their everyday processes to contactless alternatives; however, these applications often relied on an internet connection to function effectively. Ditto’s platform emerged as a solution to these challenges.” At a high level, Ditto provides a database that runs across edge devices and in the cloud, allowing developers to store and sync data peer-to-peer across mobile and edge devices. Developers can use it to subscribe to data that they need or want to see. Ditto works across Bluetooth, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi and local wired networks to automatically find and connect to other devices and then synchronize data. Changes to data locally will offline sync once Ditto discovers cloud or peer devices, according to Fish. Ditto offers different versions of its cloud database, from a tenant in a shared environment to dedicated environments tha...
