DJI Osmo Action 3 Goes Back to Basics to Beat GoPro

Images, and the devices that capture them, are my focus. I've covered cameras at PCMag for the past 10 years, which has given me a front row seat for the DSLR to mirrorless transition, the smartphone camera revolution, and the mainstream adoption of drones for aerial imaging. You can find me on Instagram The Record/shutter button is prominent on the top, and voice commands are also available (Credit: Jim Fisher) The Action 3 is palm-sized and includes mounting clips on its bottom so you can put it in tight spaces to get interesting angles. An ultra-wide lens captures the world in 4K, and you get both front and rear screens to monitor video. The Osmo has a set of mounting points at its base to secure the camera for 16:9 recording, and ships with an accessory frame that adds a second set of mounts for 9:16 vertical recording. Both screens are touch-sensitive, and DJI promises that they'll work with wet hands. We just got the camera in for evaluation, but I was able to operate it with just-washed hands; the screen didn't do well if it was dripping with water, too. Voice commands are an option, and the camera has physical buttons to swap between shooting modes and a shutter release/Record button for pictures and video. The lens cover can be removed if it's scratched or damaged; be careful not to lose the orange o-ring inside when swapping the cover, it's integral to the waterproofing. The camera packs a 1/1.7-inch imaging system capable of shooting in 4K resolution at 120fps with a wide 155-degree field of view. It packs DJI’s RockSteady 3.0 image stabilization that works even at 4K/120fps, as well as HorizonSteady which can keep footage level for surfers “even through heavy bumps and 360-degree rotations,” according to the company. Rounding out things is HorizonBalancing which DJI calls “the perfect middle ground between RockSteady and HorizonSteady” for activities like an FPV obstacle course run. DJI claims that the 1770mAh ‘Extreme’ battery can be fully charged in around 50 minutes and allows the camera to record for up to 160 minutes. Improvements have been made to heat management, allowing it to handle temperatures as low as -4 degrees F and run continuously at 4K / 60fps until the battery is drained. Its predecessor reportedly suffered from a DJI claims that the Osmo Action 3 is the first action camera to feature two touchscreens, allowing the user to access settings from the front or back. Additional features include three-mic stereo recording (to better silence wind), voice controls, and a 4x digital zoom. If the built-in microphones prove insufficient, the Action 3 supports DJI microphones via direct USB-C connections and other external microphones via 3.5mm to USB-C. Despite losing its modularity, the Osmo Action 3 will still have a host of attachments and accessories available, including a waterproof case for extended sessions in the water, a...

DJI announces Osmo Action 3, with 4K/120p recording, longer

DJI has announced announced its latest action camera, the At the core of the new action camera is a Type 1/1.7 (7.4 x 5.6mm) sensor that can capture 4K video at up to 120 frames per second (fps). The Osmo Action 3 also has electronic image stabilization as well as a D-Cinelike Color Mode for extracting the most from the footage in post-production. The lens in front of the sensor provides a 155º field of view. The electronic image stabilization is powered by DJI’s RockSteady 3.0 technology, which reduces camera shake in all directions with footage up to 4K/120p. HorizonSteady further helps to eliminate camera shake while also correcting for horizon stabilization, even through full 360º rotations. There’s also the HorizonBalancing feature DJI added to the Action 2 in a firmware update earlier this year, which corrects horizon tilts within +/-45º with 4K/60p video. DJI says HorizonBalancing is ‘a perfect middle ground between RockSteady and HorizonSteady.’ Powering all of this is a new 1,770mAh Extreme Battery that DJI claims can record 1080/30p video for up to 160 minutes. While that time will likely be much lower when shooting 4K/120p video with one of the image stabilization modes turned on, charging the battery can be done quickly thanks to built-in USB-C Power Delivery, which can charge the battery to 80% in as little as 18 minutes with a 30W charger (100% in 50 minutes). The Osmo Action 3 features dual touchscreens on the front and rear of the display, as well as a thre...

Osmo Action 3 is equipped with a more comprehensive stabilization system, which provides three stabilization modes to choose from. RockSteady 3.0 adopts a new generation of intelligent stabilization algorithm, which can effectively eliminate camera shake in all directions. It supports recording up to 4K/120fps videos from a stable and immersive first-person perspective. HorizonSteady not only effectively eliminates camera shake in all directions, but also horizontally corrects tilt at any angle, so that the footage can remain horizontally stable, even through heavy bumps and 360° rotations. In addition, you can activate HorizonBalancing, which corrects the tilt horizontally within ±45° and supports recording stable 4K/60fps HD videos. • Osmo Action 3 features excellent operating time [6] in both room-temperature and cold environments. In 25° C (77° F) environments: When recording 1080p/30fps video, the max operating time is 160 minutes. When recording 1080p/60fps video, the max operating time is 124 minutes. When recording 4K/120fps video, the max operating time is 31 minutes. In -20° C (-4° F) environments: When recording 1080p/30fps video, the max operating time is 150 minutes. When recording 1080p/60fps video, the max operating time is 117 minutes. When recording 4K/120fps video, the max operating time is 65 minutes. • In addition to the accessories included in the Standard Combo, useful accessories for Osmo Action 3 also include the Osmo Action 3 Multifunctional Batter...
