Monkeys Love Their Alcohol

In 2015, Dudley turned this “drunken monkey” theory into a book, The Drunken Monkey: Why We Drink and Abuse Alcohol, which hypothesizes that humans’ proclivity towards alcohol first arose from our monkey ancestors smelling their way to ripe, nutritious, alcohol-laden fruits. Dudley pulled together related research and case studies in his book, but now, seven years later, a new study conducted on Barro Colorado is the first to directly analyze and subsequently support Dudley’s theory. To track the alcohol consumption of black-handed spider monkeys, Christina Campbell of California State University, Northridge, the lead author of the Campbell and Weaver spent 12-hour days following black-handed spider monkeys through the dense rainforests of Barro Colorado Island in Panama. College Ave., will open for the last time on Nov. 2, co-owner Mike Campana confirmed with the Coloradoan on Wednesday. "We just kind of sat down, took a look at everything and decided it was time," Mike Campana said of himself and fellow owners Chris Brown and Tony Campana, Mike's father. "Fourteen years is one heck of a run ... we're so appreciative." The bar and restaurant — named for a Kung Fu movie and known for its jungle theme and rope swing bar seats— opened in October 2005, according to Coloradoan archives. There's been a gradual turning of the tide on the Upper East Side in the past decade, a gentle erosion of some of the more abrasive characteristics of the much-maligned neighborhood. Yes, Dorrian's still lurks, but cool new places like Penrose and Jones Wood Foundry have thrived, tilling the soil for similarly hip spots to take root. The underserved section of the neighborhood in the East 90s has needed some fresh blood—especially with the scourge of the Second Avenue Subway construction—and new Anglo-Indian cocktail restaurant There may be mini-bicycles serving as decoration, but this doesn't feel as much like a faux-Brooklyn facsimile as many other newcomers do. Owner Arun Mirchandani, along with two partners, designed the restaurant to channel colonial India, from the cricket ball door handles to the beautiful chudidaar kurtas worn by the servers. The charming cocktail glasses, which Mirchandani began collecting when the restaurant was still just in his imagination, have a charming old-world look with their crystal etchings and delicate stems. They're lovely, if a little unwieldy when filled to the brim with one of the bar's floral, herbaceous cocktails. Our species' attraction to alcohol is not so unique in the animal world. This was first proposed as the so-called “drunken monkey” hypothesis by Robert Dudley,a professor of Integrative Biology at the University of California. Our attraction to alcohol began millions of years ago, according to Dudley, when our ape and monkey ancestors found out that the scent of alcohol led them to ripe, fermenting, and extremely nutritious fruits. This would give them an evolutionary advantage, as they could eat energizing fruits before other animals can even get to them. Now, a new study from California State University, Northridge, A direct test of the drunken monkey hypothesis Dudley wrote in his book "The Drunken Monkey: Why We Drink and Abuse Alcohol" that some fruits known to be eaten by primates have a naturally high alcohol content of up to 7 percent. However, he didn't have any evidence showing that monkeys or apes preferred and ate fermented fruits, or that the alcohol in the fruit was digested.
