The Economics Honours course was introduced in Dyal Singh College way back in 1987, since when the Department of Economics has progressed by leaps and bounds and has never looked back. Starting from a cut-off of as low as 70% to the current high of 97% (currently one of the highest in the University), from barely few students in each section to over 250 students in the department at present, from few permanent teachers to a staff strength of over 17 and producing a silver and bronze medallist in the University, the department has indeed come a long way. The Department currently offers B. A. (Hons.) Economics, B. A. Program in Economics, and several inter-disciplinary papers (called the Generic Elective, GE, papers) for the students of other honours and program courses. On an average, one fourth of all the honours students in the college opt for the Generic Elective offered by economics department. The department not only focusses on academics, but also on the all-round development of the students to ensure their successful placement in premier academic institutions and companies in India and abroad. For the purpose, the department works in close association with the Placement Cell of the college.
