LIECHTENSTEIN NATIONAL DAY

Liechtenstein National Day on August 15, is a day when everyone gathers in Vaduz Castle. For returning schoolchildren, it is the first time they see their classmates after the summer vacation. The older generations, however, have made it a ritual to watch the fireworks, which take place around 10 P.M. The National Day concludes with a stunning 30-minute firework display near Vaduz Castle. History of Liechtenstein National Day In 1940, the government of the Principality of Liechtenstein declared August 15 a public holiday for the first time. This holiday is unique in that it originated during a time of conflict. Adolf Hilter had just proclaimed that small states had no right to exist, which ignited the spark of founding this National Day by the very tiniest state as an act of resistance and patriotism. The same day also commemorates Prince Franz Josef II, who was born on August 16, 1906. However, upon his death in 1989, the celebration remained on August 15 rather than being moved to the February 14 birthday of his son and successor, Prince Hans-Adam II. Celebrating the national day in the summer rather than in winter is more practical because celebrations would be limited by the weather. Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom also followed suit regarding royal birthdays. Staatsfeiertag was nominated as the official state for the holiday of Liechtenstein by law in 1990. Since then, a state ceremony has been held on the castle meadow next to Vaduz Castle to comm...
