Segregation Persists in Public Schools 69 Years After ‘Brown’ America’s public schools remain firmly separate. White students go to school with white students. Students of color are the classmates of students of color. Same goes for the more affluent and the poorer. That’s the bottom line of a new report from the U.S. Department of Education released the week marking the 69th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision, outlawing racial segregation of children in public schools. It outlines the ongoing problem of school segregation, emphasizes the advantages of diverse schools based on decades of research, and offers solutions for districts wanting to desegregate. Simultaneously, the Education Department announced grant funding for districts to foster diversity. Subsequent to the Brown ruling, the nation made strides in making public education accessible and equitable. Desegregation, though, had reversed by the 1990s. White students now make up less than half of all students enrolled in public schools, according to 2022 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics. Between 1991 and 2000, segregation between white students and Black students increased and has remained unchanged. Socioeconomic isolation likely increased between 1998 and 2020. “Students are going to very different types of schools depending on their races,” said Erica Frankenberg, a professor of education and demography and the director of the center for edu...

This report focuses on the workforce, cultural, and technological shifts for ten macro trends emerging in higher education in 2023. Across these three areas of shift, we report the major impacts and steps that institutions are taking in response to each trend. Some trends overlap with the 2022 Higher Education Trend Watch report. However, while some topics and issues remain consistent, significant shifts have occurred across many of the trends for 2023. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, higher education institutions shifted from emergency response to long-term adaptation and strategically planning for what's next. Many institutions have already implemented hybrid/remote work and learning arrangements, supported by a variety of innovative technologies and tools. Institutions are now focused on designing and implementing needed policies and initiatives, creating new positions, committees, and workgroups, and expanding and upgrading their technology. This focus on adapting and planning can also be seen in some additional trends this year, such as Focus on increasing institutional resilience and Expansion of the digital transformation of higher education. While institutions are preparing in these ways for a sustainable future, leaders still need to consider and plan for significant challenges, including retention and recruitment (students, faculty, staff, and leaders), costs and budgets, varying and changing expectations and preferences when it comes to teaching, learni...

11 Critical Issues Facing Educators in 2023 (Opinion)

For several years, I wrote a list of 10, 11, or even 15 critical issues facing education at the end of a year to give a glimpse into issues to consider for the following year. Then COVID happened and blew my last list of issues up. Why? Because it never occurred to me to put a pandemic on the list of critical issues in 2019. We have educational issues to consider every year that also highlight what teachers, leaders, and students face. Education has often been a dumping ground for criticism of educators who are tasked with teaching children content, feeding them when they come in hungry because they live in poverty or are homeless, and, at the same time, practicing school safety drills because students and teachers have to prepare for fending off the next school shooter. Television shows and movies poke fun at educators and school, politicians have “plans” about how they can do it better, although the large majority of them ever step foot in a school since they graduated. During all of that “entertainment,” educators are supposed to just go in and do their jobs for the love of education and children. And that’s exactly what they do. 11 Issues for 2023 These issues were chosen based on the number of times they came up in stories on Education Week or in workshops and coaching sessions that I do in my role as a leadership coach and workshop facilitator. For full disclosure, some of the issues will be difficult to read, but they are the reality for teachers, leaders, staff, an...
