Eknath Shinde, the man who changed the game in Maharashtra’s politics

By Kamlesh Damodar Sutar: Maharashtra minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde plunged the ruling alliance in the state into a political crisis by reportedly moving to a hotel in Gujarat's Surat with several party MLAs. The move has put a question mark on the future of Maharashtra’s ruling alliance led by the Shiv Sena (whose leader Uddhav Thackeray is the chief minister) and also comprising the NCP and the Congress. Eknath Shinde, an auto driver in Thane, lost two of his children in a tragic accident. His son and daughter drowned in Satara in front of his eyes. Shinde became reclusive and decided to stay away from politics. He was a Shiv Sena corporator back then. But Shinde's political guru, Anand Dighe, led him back into active politics. Late Anand Dighe was a mass leader from Thane. Soon, Eknath Shinde was appointed as the leader of the house in Thane Municipal corporation. After Dighe's death in 2001, Shinde grew exponentially and played a crucial role in strengthening the Sena in the state, particularly in the Thane region. He has been responsible for organising the Sena’s major political events. Shinde carefully built his image mirroring Dighe, with a similar beard, and adopted Dighe's unique style of functioning. After Raj Thackeray and Narayan Rane's revolt, it was Shinde who brought crowds to Sena rallies. During the 2019 political crisis, it was Shinde who wrestled back a few MLAs. His son, Shrikant Shinde, is Sena's Member of Parliament from Kalyan. Eknath S...

Maharashtra CM Shinde steps in, gets two kids injured in AC blast airlifted to Pune

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who lost his two children in a boat accident twenty years ago, stepped forward to lend a helping hand to a Maharashtrian family living in Patna on Saturday. The chief minister arranged two private ambulances to airlift two children, aged 10 and 12, who had suffered severe burn injuries after an air conditioner exploded at their home early on Friday morning. Shinde himself footed the Rs 20 lakh bill of the two private ambulances, Shiv Sena medical wing chief Mangesh Chivate told The Indian Express on Monday. The family of Amol Jadhav, a native of Gursule village in Khatav taluka of Satara, has been living in Patna for 20 years and is involved in the jewellery business. Early on Friday morning, gas leaked out of their air conditioner which led to an explosion. While Amol Jadhav suffered minor injuries, his wife and two kids suffered severe burns and were admitted to a hospital in Patna. Other reads | The family then alerted their relatives in Satara who, in turn, tried to contact MLAs and MPs. They also tried to get private ambulances, but the cost of ferrying the patients was too high. “We managed to get one air ambulance for Amol’s wife. It cost Rs 10 lakh. She was brought to Surya Hospital in Pune on Saturday. Amol, who suffered minor burns, arrived in Pune by plane. He has been admitted to our hospital,” said Dr Jadhav. The family members in Maharashtra then spent a day trying to get air ambulances for the two children. Kisant Sa...

Tracking Eknath Shinde’s career trajectory, from driving an auto

It was a move that has taken everyone by complete surprise. Even the most seasoned political watchers wouldn’t have been able to predict this turn of events, which developed on Thursday afternoon. And the swearing-in has not been left to any delay either. Shinde will take oath at 7.30 pm this evening at Raj Bhawan, and Fadnavis also announced that he will not be a part of the new cabinet that is likely to be sworn in in the coming week. Fadnavis further added that the BJP has decided to support “Shiv Sena Legislature Party leader” Shinde to “save Hindutva and serve the people of Maharashtra.” He highlighted that while the saffron party and Shiv Sena had contested the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections together as a pre-poll alliance, Uddhav Thackeray “backstabbed us and dumped the saffron unit in the lust for power.” Born in Maharashtra’s Satara on February 9, 1964, Shinde hails from the Maratha community. His family shifted to Thane in search of livelihood, and Eknath completed his education until class 11 at Mangala High School & Junior College, Thane. He then started doing odd jobs to eke a living, and eventually started driving an auto-rickshaw in Thane to support his family. Even while in school, Shinde was reportedly influenced by the ideologies of Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray. He took a plunge into politics and joined the party as a Sainik, introduced by then Shiv Sena President of the Thane unit – Anand Dighe – in early 1980. He started his career as a la...
