Eknath Shinde takes oath as Maharashtra CM

Rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde took oath as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai on Thursday, while BJP leader and former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister. Shinde has become Chief Minister with the support of 106 BJP MLAs, 38 rebel Shiv Sena MLAs and independents. Recently, Shinde rebelled against the Uddhav Thackeray-led government, after which Thackeray had to resign from the post. In a surprise move, the BJP announced on Thursday that it will not stake the claim for the post of Chief Minister and will support Eknath Shinde as CM. Early evening, Devendra Fadnavis made it clear that he would not be part of the Shinde Cabinet. But the BJP’s national President, JP Nadda, stated that the party wants Fadnavis to become Deputy Chief Minister in the Shinde Cabinet. Later, Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted that Fadnavis has decided to be part of the State government for the benefit of the State and the people. Experts say that with Shinde at the helm, claiming that he represents Shiv Sena which fights for Hindutva, the BJP will target the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction and support Shinde to discredit Uddhav and his supporters. Who is Eknath Shinde? Eknath Shinde (58) is MLA from Kopri-Panchpakhadi in Thane city. He originally belongs to the Satara district in western Maharashtra. He was Cabinet Minister in the Uddhav Thackeray government. Shinde shifted to Thane from Satara, where he also worked as an auto-rickshaw dr...

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde Deputy CM Fadnavis Live Address Today The Media At 2 PM Maharashtra Political Crisis Supreme Court Hearing

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis addressed the media after the big Supreme Court relief and welcomed the verdict which refused to give relief to former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray as it observed that he did not face a Floor test in the Maharashtra assembly. "This is a victory for democracy and the democratic process. We are satisfied with the verdict given by the Supreme Court," Fadnavis said. "Maha Vikas Aghadi's (MVA) conspiracy has been defeated. Now, no one should doubt that the Maharashtra government is completely legal," he added. Lashing out at Uddhav Thackeray, Fadnavis said, "It doesn't suit Uddhav Thackeray to talk about morality. I want to ask him if had he forgotten his morals when he went with NCP and Congress for the Chief Minister's post. He had not resigned on moral grounds but due to fear after people who were with him left him." Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde said, "I won't talk about what Supreme Court said about the then Maharashtra Governor, but I would say that he acted as per the situation at the time. What if the Floor test had happened and their (MVA) govt had failed it?" He asked, "Is he (Uddhav Thackeray) above SC or ECI that he will not let us appoint our Whip or any other office bearer and not let us use the name Shiv Sena." The apex court pronounced a verdict on a batch of petitions related to the 2022 Maharashtra political crisis that saw Eknath Shinde taking over as Chief Minister from Uddhav Thacker...

Eknath Shinde, the 7th CM from western Maharashtra

With Eknath Shinde sworn in on Thursday, western Maharashtra can boast of having given the state seven of its 20 CMs till date. Even within the region, Satara district alone has given the state four CMs, including Shinde. Leaders from the region have collectively held the state’s Chief Minister’s post for over 20 years already, in its legislative history of 62 years since its formation in 1960. “Heartiest congratulations to Eknath Shinde for being selected to be the chief minister of the state. I expect that he will work in the interest of Maharashtra. I am happy that after Yashwantrao Chavan, Babasaheb Bhosale and Prithviraj Chavan he will the fourth from Satara district to become the Chief Minister of the state,” tweeted NCP chief Sharad Pawar. Of the four politicians from Satara to have headed the state, the first CM was Yashwantrao Chavan who was elected to state assembly from Karad North in Satara in 1960. He was followed by Babasaheb Bhosale in the 1980s. Prithviraj Chavan, then a Member of Legislative Council, became the Chief Minister in 2010. Both Bhosale and Shinde have their native villages in Satara district but were elected from Kurla in

Eknath Shinde takes oath as Maharashtra CM, Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy

Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari administered the oath of office to them at Raj Bhavan in south Mumbai shortly after 7.30 pm. Shinde began by paying tributes to late Shiv Sena leaders Bal Thackeray and Anand Dighe. His supporters shouted slogans hailing Thackeray and Dighe as he finished taking the oath. Earlier on Thursday, BJP president J P Nadda said Fadnavis would be part of the new Maharashtra cabinet led by Shinde, minutes after Fadnavis announced he will not be in the government. Fadnavis had sprang a surprise when he announced that Shinde will be the next chief minister. His announcement defied expectations that he would return to the post with the support of the Shinde faction. "Development of the state is my priority. I will take all sections of society along with me," Shinde told after the ceremony. The meteoric rise of Shinde rivals Bollywood's film scripts. An auto-driver with humble beginnings, he went on to become the right hand man of party chief Uddhav Thackeray, and his nemesis. WATCH | Shinde is a four-time MLA and two-time minister. Skilled in organising people and events, Shinde's spark was discovered and initially used by Sena's Thane district president Nanad Dighe. That's how auto-driver Shinde started driving Dighe's car. He then became the eyes and ears of Dighe, who used to be known as the "king of Thane". Closeness with Dighe helped him get elected as a corporator in the Thane Municipal Corporation. Subsequently, Shinde became an MLA and the rest i...
