Eknath Shinde: Bal Thackeray And Anand Dighe On Posters, The Story Of Sena Man On Hindutva High Road

When Eknath Shinde and fellow Shiv Sena mutineers were still camping in faraway Guwahati -- the endgame still about a week away -- posters came up in his stronghold of Thane near Mumbai, showing him with two other men. One was Bal Thackeray -- the Sena founder whose son he has unseated, but whose ideology he lays claim to -- and the other was a man named Anand Dighe. These are two key protagonists in the story of Eknath Shinde, a political thriller with the Hindutva-Maratha ideology as a running thread. Eknath Shinde may now be seen as the man who divided the Sena but three decades ago he had all the elements that made the party what it is, or was. A Maratha by community, auto-rickshaw driver by profession, and a union leader who could rally people, Mr Shinde was a Shiv Sainik who could command an area, and not just win an election. And his political rise in the 1990s coincided with Bal Thackeray embracing Hindutva to make a statewide push and gain a nationwide image. But the story -- which saw a thrilling twist today as Eknath Shinde became Chief Minister -- has a background, of the rise of a party and a leader. Though it came a big player much later, the Shiv Sena, born in 1966 -- two years after Eknath Shinde was born in Satara district -- was powerful in the Mumbai-Thane region by the 1970s, which is when the Shinde family moved to Thane. As a child from a family with limited means and married relatively early, Eknath Shinde worked odd jobs, including a stint as an aut...

Eknath Shinde, the man who changed the game in Maharashtra’s politics

By Kamlesh Damodar Sutar: Maharashtra minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde plunged the ruling alliance in the state into a political crisis by reportedly moving to a hotel in Gujarat's Surat with several party MLAs. The move has put a question mark on the future of Maharashtra’s ruling alliance led by the Shiv Sena (whose leader Uddhav Thackeray is the chief minister) and also comprising the NCP and the Congress. Eknath Shinde, an auto driver in Thane, lost two of his children in a tragic accident. His son and daughter drowned in Satara in front of his eyes. Shinde became reclusive and decided to stay away from politics. He was a Shiv Sena corporator back then. But Shinde's political guru, Anand Dighe, led him back into active politics. Late Anand Dighe was a mass leader from Thane. Soon, Eknath Shinde was appointed as the leader of the house in Thane Municipal corporation. After Dighe's death in 2001, Shinde grew exponentially and played a crucial role in strengthening the Sena in the state, particularly in the Thane region. He has been responsible for organising the Sena’s major political events. Shinde carefully built his image mirroring Dighe, with a similar beard, and adopted Dighe's unique style of functioning. After Raj Thackeray and Narayan Rane's revolt, it was Shinde who brought crowds to Sena rallies. During the 2019 political crisis, it was Shinde who wrestled back a few MLAs. His son, Shrikant Shinde, is Sena's Member of Parliament from Kalyan. Eknath S...

Jolt to Uddhav as loyalist’s son joins Shinde’s Sena

Former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray received a major jolt on Monday when Bhushan Desai, the son of former minister and veteran Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Subhash Desai, joined Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Sena at an event here. “I welcome Bhushan Desai into the Shiv Sena. Seeing the constructive and progressive work we are doing, he joined us. Everyone has their own opinion. He (Bhushan) joined us on his own. There was no pressure on him. Gajanan Kirtikar too came to us the same way, drawn to the path we are following,” Shinde said. Speaking at a press conference, Bhushan said, “It is Shinde who is taking forward Balasaheb’s thoughts and dreams. I trust him and I have experienced how he works. I have taken the decision after seeing him and being inspired by his functioning.” His father, however, said Bhushan’s joining the Shinde-led Sena was painful for him but it would not make any difference to the Sena (UBT). Subhash Desai, 80, was an associate of late Bal Thackeray since the party was founded in the sixties. He is among the old-time Sena leaders who managed to retain their position in the inner circle of Uddhav when the latter took control of the party. A three-time MLA, Subhash has not won an Assembly election since 2009 but was accommodated in the Sena as a minister and held the important industry portfolio in the previous “My son has not been active in the When asked whether there was any pressure on him as he faced allegations of corruption in Mahara...

On Supriya Sule's Elevation, Eknath Shinde's Uddhav Thackeray Comparison

Srinagar: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde Sunday accused the Nationalist Congress Party of promoting dynastic politics, a day after NCP president Sharad Pawar appointed his daughter Supriya Sule as working president. "I will only say that like in the Shiv Sena, Uddhav ji became the CM himself, and made his son a minister, the same is happening in the NCP as well," Mr Shinde told a select group of reporters at the Raj Bhavan here. He called on J-K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. "(Sharad) Pawar was president, and made a working president in the family. This is an internal matter of their party, and I don't have to meddle in that, but it has happened like that only," Mr Shinde said. Asked about his son and MP Shrikant Shinde's remarks that some local BJP leaders in Maharashtra were engaging in selfish politics, the Maharashtra CM said it was a small matter and the BJP has issued an explanation over it. "It was a small issue and it is over now. The president of Maharashtra BJP, Chandrashekhar Bawankule has given an explanation on that and I don't feel there is any need to say anything else on that," Mr Shinde said. Asked to comment over the political situation in Maharashtra, Mr Shinde said when he returns to his state, there will be a lot of time to discuss it. "I am in Kashmir right now. When I return there, we will have a lot of time to discuss that. I met Manoj Sinha and we had good discussions. I requested him that many tourists come here from Maharashtra, and ...

Eknath Shinde's son alleges 'selfish politics' within Shiv Sena

By Ritvick Arun Bhalekar: Shiv Sena MP and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's son Shrikant Shinde slammed BJP leaders in the state's Kalyan-Dombivli unit on Friday and said there are some who are engaging in "selfish politics". His remark comes a day after local BJP leaders passed a resolution not to support Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The resolution was made during a meeting held in Shrikant's Kalyan constituency in the presence of the cabinet minister from the BJP, Ravindra Chavan. The cause of the rift between the two parties who have partnered up in Maharashtra is believed to be a molestation case filed against BJP's Dombivli East Mandal president Nandu Joshi. The local BJP leaders have alleged that Joshi was framed by Shiv Sena leaders to settle political scores. ALSO READ | Reacting to the resolution, Shrikant Shinde said the party is determined to reinstate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024. "We will try hard for it. But, for some petty reasons, the selfish politics in the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance is being continued by some leaders in Dombivli," he added. The Shiv Sena MP also said he does not aspire to any post and it is the senior leaders of the alliance who will take the decision of who to nominate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. "Even if I am not nominated, we will unanimously campaign for whoever is the candidate and make him win," added Shrikant Shinde. Shrikant Shinde, however, clarified that there is no misund...
