Australia v England LIVE, first ODI, Adelaide

Summary • Australia go 1-0 up in three-match series • Smith's 80 not out sees hosts to victory • Warner (86) & Head (69) put on 147 for first wicket • England set Australia 288 to win first of three ODIs • Malan hits second ODI century, eventually falling for a brilliant 134 off 128 balls • Left-hander holds England together after they slip to 118-5 • Roy makes 6 off 11 balls on return to side • Second ODI in Sydney on Saturday (03:20 GMT) Player of the match, England's Dawid Malan: "To get to the T20 World Cup final and be ruled out was gutting, so to come here, prove my fitness and score a hundred was extremely satisfying. "The pitch did a little bit early on, they bowled really well with the new ball. We just didn't seem to get the same movement, it also got a bit dewy later on and we were probably 30 or 40 runs short, if we're being honest. "I think it's always important to score runs. I think 50 overs is probably my strongest format but it's hard to get into the team with how guys have performed the last couple of years. "But if I keep doing what I'm doing, I might be part of that squad." On his bowling: "I was going to come on a little bit earlier but then Alex Carey came in and I didn't fancy bowling to that short boundary!" Australia captain Pat Cummins on Test Match Special: "It was a magnificent innings from Dawid Malan, he just kept ticking over and targeted the short boundary, he was class. "They did well to get to that score from their position but we bowled r...

Age 32 Caps 92 Captain/left-hand bat, right-arm seam Stokes has proved an inspirational leader and an excellent cricket captain since his appointment last April, but sadly his left knee seems to be a complete mess. Though he is adamant about his ability to bat, he has become a bowler of last resort and is quite happy doing nothing but leading – in the warmup against Ireland he became the first winning captain in Test history not to bat, bowl or keep wicket. Ollie Pope Age 25 C aps 36 Vice-captain/right-hand bat Since Stokes’s decision to play Pope, for the first time in his career, at No 3 the 25-year-old’s average is 49.80 – before that it was 28.66 – and his strike rate from 50.6 to 78, and he has been named vice-captain. Says he is determined to make up for his miserable Ashes in 2021-22, when he averaged 11.16 in six innings: “I feel like I’m a different player, mentally and technically.” Moeen Ali has come out of retirement from Test cricket and been added to England’s Ashes squad. Photograph: Zac Goodwin/PA Jimmy Anderson Age 40 Caps 179 Right-arm seam England’s evergreen man for all seasons just keeps going. “I don’t feel old or that I’m slowing down. Age is just a number,” he said earlier this year. Also just numbers: 179 Tests, 685 wickets, 7,675 Ashes deliveries (37 overs from a place in the all-time top three). “If we play to the best of our ability I don’t think anyone can cope with us,” he said last month, in a surprise pre-Ashes broadside.
