Examine the distributional pattern of railways in India. from Geography Transport And Communication Class 12 CBSE

The reforms and its effects: (i) Indian Railways has launched an extensive programme to convert the metre and narrow gauges to broad gauge. (ii) Moreover, steam engines have been replaced by diesel and electric engines. (iii) This step has increased the speed as well as the haulage capacity. (iv) The replacement of steam engines run by coal has also improved the environment of the stations. (v) Metro rail has revolutionised the urban transport system in Kolkata and Delhi. Replacement of diesel buses by CNG-run vehicles along with the introduction of metro is a welcome step towards controlling the air pollution in urban centres. The important modes of transport in India are: Land, water and air. Each mode of transport contributes to the development of the economy. Each provides a strong support for setting up industries as well as help in the growth of agriculture. All the means of transport compete with each other. They also complement each other and constituted a single integrated network which accelerated economic prosperity and social unity of a country. Waterways are an important mode of transport for both passenger and cargo traffic in India. It includes inland waterways and shipping. The Inland Waterways Authority of India was set up in 1986 for the development, maintenance and regulation of national waterways in the country. At present, there are three national waterways in the country. Other ten waterways are being examined to declare them also as national waterway...

How do physical and economic factors influence the distribution pattern of the Indian Railway network? Explain with examples.

The distribution of railway network in India has been largely influenced by physiographic, economic and administrative factors. The northern plains with their vast level land, high population density and rich agricultural resources provided the most favourable condition for their growth. However, a large number of rivers requiring the construction of bridges across their wide beds posed some obstacles. In the hilly terrains of the peninsular region, railway tracts are laid through low hills, gaps or tunnels. The Himalayan mountainous regions too are unfavourable for the construction of railway lines due to high relief, sparse population and lack of economic opportunities. Likewise, it was difficult to lay railway lines on the sandy plain of western Rajasthan, swamps of Gujarat, forested tracks of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Jharkhand. The contiguous stretch of Sahyadri could be crossed only through gaps or passes (Ghats). In recent times, the development of the Konkan railway along the west coast has facilitated the movement of passengers and goods in this most important economic region of India. It has also faced a number of problems such as the sinking of track in some stretches and landslides.

“The distribution pattern of Indian Railway network is influenced by the physiographic factors” Examine the statement.

The physiographic factors that influenced the distribution pattern of Indian Railways: 1. Northern Plains were the most favourable because of its level land, agricultural prowess, and high population density. But constructing bridges over the huge river network was a problem. 2. In the peninsular region, railway tracks were made on low hills or through gaps and tunnels because it was a hilly region. 3. Unfavourable places for railways tracks include sandy plains of Himalayas, Rajasthan, Gujarat swamps and forested tracks of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Jharkhand. Explanation: India has a very diverse geography and economic activities depend a lot on the areas’ physiographic factors. So, it’s impossible to have an even distribution of railways in India.

How do physiographic and economic factors influence the distribution pattern

Examples of the distribution pattern of the railway network in the country being influenced by physiographic and economic factors are Physiographic Factors (i) The Northern Plains with their vast level land, high population density and rich agricultural resources provided the most favourable condition for growth of railways, although crossing wide rivers posed some obstacles. (ii) In the hilly terrain of the peninsular region, railway tracks were laid through low hills, gaps or tunnels. (iii) The Himalayan mountain regions are unfavourable for the construction of railway lines due to high relief, undulating terrain and low traffic. (iv) It is difficult to lay railway tracks in the sandy plains of Western Rajasthan, swamps of Gujarat and forested areas of states in central India, e.g. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Jharkhand. Economic Factors Given below are some economic factors that affect the distribution of railways (i) State funding plays a vital role in the development of railways across the nations. (ii) The state with flexible laws supports the growth of railways. (iii) The places that are highly industrialised attract the development of railways. (iv) Since the growth of both is complimentary to each other, e.g. recendy railway network is enhancing along the industrial corridors.
