God Soorya was married to Daksha Kanya Sadnya. Sadnya could not tolerate the radiance of God Surya. She used to feel that by doing penance she could increase her brilliance. Or, by the power of her penance, she could diminish the glare of God Surya. But for God Surya, she was a spouse worshipping wife. From God Surya, she had three children. One was Vaivastahva Manu. The second was Yama Raj. And the third was Yamuna. Sadnya loved her children very much. But, she was very upset with the radiance of God Surya. One day, she thought that she would separate from God Surya, go to her parents’ home and undertake great penance. And if there was opposition, she would go far away to a lonely and undertake great penance. By strength of her penance, Sadnya created a ‘Chaya’ (shadow) of herself and named her Suvarna. And, and then the shadow of herself became Suvarna. After handing over the children to Chaya, Sadnya told her that Chaya would thereafter play the role of womanhood and nurse her three children. She told her if any problem arose, she should call her and she would come rushing to her. Shani Dev, the Son of Surya Dev: Shani is the son of Surya Bhagwan (Sun god) and Goddess Chhaya (Goddess Shade). He is also the brother of Lord Yama (god of death). Shani dev is called “Karmafal Daata” (Lord of Justice) as he was given the authority to reward or punish people for their good and bad deeds. Surya Dev’s Misunderstanding: Once Shani was born, Sun god glanced at the newborn baby so fondly. When the baby was so black in color like charcoal, the sun god was put down and was heavily disappointed. In fact, he doubted that someone else was the father of Shani since Sun-god himself was dazzling white in color. This doubt and ill-treatment angered Shani and he cursed his father also to turn black in color. Later Lord Shiva resolves the doubt of Surya and tells him Shani became black in the womb due to Surya’s own heat. Since then, Surya and Shani developed a good mutual understanding. Curse on Shani Deva: As per an ancient story, To avenge their insults which they faced because of Shani earlier, Mangal Dev curses Dhammini with Mangal dosh in the marriage house of her horoscope. The direct effect of this curse comes to Shani. Shani Deva is the son of Lord Shiva through his AshtaMurty forms. AshtaMurti forms are the 8 major forms of Lord Shiva which are described in Form of Fire, Form of Water, Form of Air, Form of Indra, Form of Plants (earth), Form of rain cloud, Form of Moon, Form of Sun. Thus, Sun is form of Lord Shiva through his AshtaMurty form and his son is Shainaschara (Saturn). The same thing is explained also in Puranas.
