Dec 3 (Reuters) - With the World Cup knockout phase having begun, here is an overview of the teams advancing to the last 16 at the tournament in Qatar: HOW DOES THE KNOCKOUT STAGE AT WORLD CUP 2022 WORK? * In the knockout stage the teams will play each other once, with the winning team going to the next round. There are total of four rounds: Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, which will take place on Dec. 18. * There is also a third place playoff between the losers of the semi-finals. * If the scores are equal at the end of normal playing time, extra time is played for two periods of 15 minutes each. If the score is still tied, this is followed by a penalty shoot-out to determine the winners. WHICH TEAMS HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THE KNOCKOUT STAGE? GROUP A * The Netherlands secured a place in the last 16 with victories over African champions Senegal and hosts Qatar, topping Group A despite a 1-1 draw with Ecuador. * The reigning African Champions started the World Cup with a loss to the Netherlands, but they turned their fortunes with a 3-1 win over hosts Qatar and a decisive 2-1 win over Ecuador. The FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar now enters its knock out stage. The tournament had started with total of 32 teams divided across eight different groups with each having four teams. The first and second toppers of each group have advanced to the next stage and that makes it now a fight between 16 teams for the coveted trophy. The fixtures of the knockout stage is out. Morocco and Croatia will be moving on to the knockout rounds from Group F after proving the most effective over the course of three group matches. European forces Belgium and Croatia were the favorites entering the tournament, but Morocco pipped both to first place in the group. The Atlas Lions were convincing throughout group play with their lockdown defending — they allowed one goal, and it was an own goal — and timely scoring from their talented front line. Croatia will be joining Morocco in the Round of 16 as the runner-up. They grinded their way through the group, with two 0-0 draws against Belgium and Morocco to go with a 4-1 win over a Canada team that defended naively throughout group play. Canada's fortunes could have been different had star Alphonso Davies buried a penalty kick in the early stages of the opening match against Belgium. However, it was stopped by Thibaut Courtois and it was all downhill from there as the Canadians lost the game despite dominating. They were eliminated after the loss in their second game against Croatia. The North American side enjoyed positive stretches of play against Croatia and Morocco— and they even took the lead against Croatia after 90 seconds— but will take their learning lessons and look to come back stronger in 2026.
