FIFA has announced that the 2026 World Cup, to be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will officially feature the 48-team expanded field that has been so often discussed over recent years. The traditional 32-team format will be used one last time at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before being scrapped and replaced by the new expanded format. It's not the first time that FIFA has amended the World Cup format in an attempt to continue to grow the value and popularity of its marquee event. The addition of matches contributes to an increase in broadcast and commercial revenue. The Sporting News brings you a closer look at how the expanded 2026 World Cup will work, as well as how the change in format could affect the game both positively and negatively. Quarterfinals World Cup 2022: Teams qualified, bracket, match schedule, fixtures and how it works

The 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals are in the books and there are two surprise teams advancing to the semifinals though one of them shouldn't be a surprise any more. Morocco, who were one of the pre-tournament long shots at 250-to-1 to win it all, are now just two matches away from hoisting the trophy after downing Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal. The Atlas Lions move on to face defending World Cup champions France, who survived the heavyweight bout against England after Harry Kane missed a penalty with six minutes remaining. The other big surprise saw Croatia moving on after coming from behind with a late extra-time equalizer against Brazil, and then finishing off the South American giants on penalty kicks. Croatia will have a chance to reach a second straight final — they were also finalists in 2018 against France — when they battle another South American power in Argentina, who survived a penalty shootout of their own as Lionel Messi's dream of winning a World Cup is still alive.
