Jio Cinema, Google, Twitter And The Football Fever

Even as curtains come down on the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, JioCinema heralds a new dawn as digital viewership went past TV in India for the first time for a global marquee sports event. A monumental 32 million viewers tuned in to JioCinema on the final day that delivered arguably the most extraordinary FIFA World Cup Final as Argentina picked the FIFA World Cup Trophy for the first time since 1986. Over the entire World Cup duration, there were 110 million viewers so 11 crore people actually went ahead and consumed the football on digital content. The cumulative reach for the first 58 matches on television was around 47 million. So assuming that they even doubled that number in the second half digital was far ahead of television itself. India as a result of this has actually become one of the highest digital viewership markets for FIFA events where it does not even participate. 32 million Indians watching and over 110 million viewers consume the content on digital throughout the World Cup. This means that it is the largest viewership market for an event where India isn’t participating. So that was the other positive that really stood out.

Disney+ Hotstar rivals JioCinema, announces free streaming of ICC World Cup 2023 and Asia Cup

The streaming service garnered attention by live streaming major sports tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup 2022 and IPL 2023. It further expanded its offerings by adding HBO shows to its digital library. To counter JioCinema's increasing popularity, Disney+ Hotstar has announced that it will provide free live streaming of the Asia Cup and ICC Men's Cricket World Cup tournaments to all users of its mobile app. Interestingly, Disney+ Hotstar used to offer streaming of IPL matches and HBO content on a subscription basis. However, with JioCinema taking over these two significant streaming content, it seems like Disney+ Hotstar was left with no other option but to make the upcoming big event free for their users to retain the viewership. Talking about the latest announcement, Sajith Sivanandan, Head of Disney+ Hotstar said, "Disney+ Hotstar has remained at the forefront of the rapidly evolving OTT industry in India and the various innovations we have introduced to continue enhancing the viewer experience has allowed us to delight our audiences across the region. Making the Asia Cup and ICC Men's Cricket World Cup available to a wider audience, we believe, will help us grow the overall ecosystem." Not just Disney+ Hotstar, Reliance Jio is currently up in the competition against all the significant streaming services. Other than IPL, and HBO content, recently JioCinema announced the...
