Dinoflagellates can be of different colours depending on the type of pigment present. The red dinoflagellate sometimes multiplies at a very rapid rate. This is called as algal bloom. This gives a red appearance to the part of affected sea. This is also known as ‘red tide’. Toxins released by them can kill other marine species. Algal bloom refers to an increase in the population of algae or blue-green algae in water due to an enrichment of nutrients, resulting in discoloration of the water body. This causes an increase in the biological oxygen demand (BOD), resulting in the death of fishes and other aquatic animals. Red tides are caused by red dinoflagellates (Gonyaulax) that multiply rapidly. Their large numbers in the sea makes the sea appear red in colour. These release a large amount of toxin which results in the death of other marine organisms. Both of these signify the pollution of the water bodies.

This dinoflagellate produces toxins that lead to the death of fishes. The luxuriant growth of cyanobacterial members on stagnant polluted waters are called algal blooms which is caused due to eutrophication Red dinoflagellates like Gonyaulax undergo rapid multiplication and make the medeterranian sea appear red hence it is called red tides Organisms causing red tides will secrete toxins They may kill the fishes in the sea

Algal bloom refers to the vigorous growth of algae or blue-green algae in the water, due to the enrichment of water body with mineral nutrients coming from fields, resulting in discoloration of the water body. This causes an increase in the biological oxygen demand (BOD), resulting in the death of fishes and other aquatic animals, due to suffocation.
