India observes September as Poshan Maahto highlight the importance of the nutrition crisis in the country. The purpose is to heighten the awareness among people about the challenges the country is facing and the efforts that need to be made in order to meet the country’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Here are some important facts related to the subject which will help you to understand the whole debate around Nutrition, hunger and Sustainable development goals (SDGs). What is S ustainable Development Goal (SDG)? SDGs were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. SDGs are designed to bring the world to several life-changing ‘zeros’, including zero poverty, hunger, AIDS and discrimination against women and girls. The 17 SDG and 51 targets are all interconnected and in order to leave no one behind, it is important that all of them are achieved by 2030. How SDG is related to India’s nutrition problem? Third Rashtriya Poshan Maah being celebrated to promote nutrition in women and children

The third Rashtriya Poshan Maah is being celebrated in September 2020 to address the problem of malnutrition in women and children. An initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the target of POSHAN Abhiyaan is to bring down stunting in children of 0-6 years of age from 38.4 per cent to 25 per cent by 2022. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Rashtriya Poshan Maah this year will be celebrated through digital platforms. According to a recent UNICEF report, the Covid-19 pandemic may increase overall severe acute malnourished burden in the country. According to data, India has 9.3 million children below the age of five who have severe acute malnutrition (SAM). As per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 4 (2015-16), as many as 35.7 per cent of children under five years of age are underweight, 38.4 per cent are stunted (low height for age), and 21 per cent are wasted (low weight for height). Malnutrition could further exacerbate the effects of At the same time, more children are becoming malnourished due to the deteriorating quality of their diet, interruptions in nutrition and other essential services and socioeconomic shocks created by the pandemic, stated a Lancet report. Poshan Maah: Promotion of indigenous toys, growth measurement drives among focus areas

The Ministry of Women and Child Development is celebrating the fifth Rashtriya Poshan Maah from September 1 to 30. This year the objective is to trigger Poshan Maah through gram panchayats as "Poshan Panchayats" with key focus on 'women and health' and 'child and education', WCD Minister Smriti Irani said. In a meeting with anganwadis from across the country, Irani said the month-long event will witness intensive activities across the country for awareness about nutrition at the ground level through sensitisation drives, outreach programmes, identification drives, camps and fairs with special focus on pregnant and lactating women, children below six years and adolescent girls, in order to realise the vision of 'Swasth Bharat'. At the panchayat level, she said, awareness activities will be conducted by local functionaries. Poshan Panchayat Committees will work closely with field level workers -- anganwadi workers, accredited social health activists (ASHAs) and auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) -- to support problem solving and enabling service delivery. She said awareness drives on anganwadi services and good health practices will also be organised. Growth measurement drives will be conducted to bring more beneficiaries under the ambit of anganwadi services. The objective of the Rashtriya Poshan Maah (RPM) is to ensure community mobilisation and bolster people’s participation for addressing malnutrition amongst young children, and women and to ensure health and nutrition for everyone.
