Was Netaji Subhas Bose the first prime minister of independent India? Let’s discuss this at least

This week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at the India Gate, which was announced earlier this year and a hologram of which was unveiled under the Grand Canopy on 23 January, 2022, to mark Netaji’s 125 th birth anniversary. Netaji’s statue at the India Gate is a part of the government’s Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, which was launched on 75 th year of India’s Independence. Of the many initiatives taken by the government under the leadership of PM Modi, one significant move has been to resurrect the legacy of the revolutionary leader. From declassifying many files related to Netaji’s death, declaring his Birthday on 23 January as Parakram Diwas (Day of Valour) and the installation of his statute at the India Gate, PM Modi and his government have left no stones unturned in reminiscing and commemorating Netaji’s life and legacy. Of the many discussions happening around the legacy of Netaji, one major debate that briefly sparked and suddenly settled down was around his recognition as the first Prime Minister of Independent India, which both delighted and distressed several segments of the society. The idea of recognising Netaji as the first Prime Minister of Independent India has never been seriously discussed, but it gained traction when PM Modi in his speech delivered on 8 February, 2022, at the Rajya Sabha referred Netaji as the first Prime Minister of Azad Hind Fauz’s first government. Though PM Modi did not directly ref...

Here’S Why Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Did Not Become India’S First Prime Minister

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, home minister and deputy prime minister in the interim cabinet, passed away due to a heart attack on December 15, 1950. The Constituent Assembly, which Patel was an active member of, had adopted the Constitution only a year and twenty days ago (on November 26, 1949). The same was brought into force nearly nine months before Patel untimely demise. Indian Constitution, providing for universal adult franchise as the basis for parliamentary democracy, was brought in place on January 26, 1950. It was the Constitution that put in place an election commission to conduct the elections, including delimitation of constituencies, preparing the electoral rolls, organise polling, counting of votes and declaration of results. Therefore, there was no way India could have an elected government without the Constitution. There was no way a prime minister could have been chosen without members of parliament elected to the Lok Sabha. And, elections were possible only with a Constitution in place. Thus, the question of who would head the first government could be answered only in March 1952. Polling for the first general elections began in October 1951 and went on until March 1952. This was one year and three months after Patel passed away.

Why isn't Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose seen as India’s first Prime Minister, asks TMC

By Suryagni Roy: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose has been honoured with the title of 'liberator of India' on multiple occasions. On his birth anniversary, January 23, Jago Bangla, the official mouthpiece of the Trinamool Congress, issued a front page top header asking “Why isn’t Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose given the recognition of the first PM of India?” Not only Bose, but the article mentioned 15 others who were sworn in as cabinet members of Bose's government. Chandra Bose, BJP leader and Netaji's grandnephew stated that PM Narendra Modi had mentioned this fact in his speech at the Red Fort. "PM Modi had mentioned at the Red Fort that Netaji was the first Prime Minister of the Azad Hind Government. I feel that government should issue a gazette notification stating that Netaji was the first prime minister of undivided India," said Chandra Bose. " The central government has no pride or concern with Netaji. After, our CM wrote on tableau, they came up with the hologram. We will take it (Netaji as first PM of undivided India) to the central government but it is on them, we can demand and we can knock them, but what they will do, let them do" said Bratya Basu, Education Minister of West Bengal.

Jawaharlal Nehru

An influential leader in the Indian independence movement and political heir of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru became the nation’s first prime minister in 1947. Although faced with the challenge of uniting a vast population diverse in culture, language and religion, he successfully established various economic, social and educational reforms that earned him the respect and admiration of millions of Indians. His policies of non-alignment and Panchscheel—principles of peaceful coexistence—guided India’s international relations until the outbreak of the Sino-Indian War in 1962, which contributed to his declining health and subsequent death in 1964, ending his 17-years in office. His daughter, Indira Gandhi, and grandson, Rajiv Gandhi, later served as prime ministers. Jawaharlal Nehru: Early Life and Family Jawaharlal Nehru was born into an affluent Kashmiri Brahman family in Allahabad on November 14, 1889. Tutored at home until the age of 15, Nehru subsequently attended Harrow in England and, later, Trinity College, Cambridge. After studying law at London’s Inner Temple, he returned to India at the age of 22 where he practiced law with his father and prominent barrister, Motilal Nehru. Did you know? In 1949, after zookeepers had killed most of Tokyo’s wild animals to prevent them from escaping during World War II air raids, Nehru delighted Japanese children by presenting Ueno Zoo with an Indian elephant. In 1916, four years after his parents had made the suitable arrangemen...
