Aurélien Tchouameni (DM) Not the type of game for a player of his qualities to shine and he contributed to France’s nervy start in midfield but thereafter he did his job. 6 Adrien Rabiot (CM) Guilty of being caught in possession early, Rabiot took the game by the scruff of the neck and by half-time he had a goal and an assist. An excellent link between defence and attack, especially in broken play, but Deschamps will want more control against stronger opposition. 8 Antoine Griezmann (AM) Ability to drift into space between the lines made him a menace all night. Highlights and analysis of France's 4

Olivier Giroud scored twice to go level with Thierry Henry as France’s record all-time scorer and Kylian Mbappe helped torment Australia’s defence in a 4-1 victory for the reigning champions. Didier Deschamps was without his first-choice centre-forward after Karim Benzema withdrew with a thigh injury on the eve of the tournament but France looked lethal in attack at times, with Giroud, Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann combining well. Australia took the lead through Craig Goodwin early on but France hit back with two quick-fire doubles either side of half-time. Dominic Fifield, Liam Tharme and Jacob Tanswell analyse the key talking points from France’s emphatic win at the Al Janoub Stadium… A game, as they say, of one-eighth and seven-eighths: Australia came bounding enthusiastically out of the traps, got an early goal....but never really looked like getting themselves into tomorrow's "Biggest World Cup Shocks Ever!" listicles. Mbappe was good, Dembele very good, the much-maligned Rabiot justified his selection and Griezmann was stitching it all together in the middle. And, oh, look: I've forgotten Olivier Giroud. How apt. He is now level with Thierry Henry as France's all time leading goalscorer, and remains a great human being. Thanks for reading the liveblog!
