Garmi Web Series Review: SonyLiv's web series 'Garmi' will grow, a new angry youth entry into the OTT space

Manoj Vashishta, New Delhi. Tigmanshu Dhulia started his directorial career with the film ‘Haasil’. The film is based on the student politics taking place in a university in the city of Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in Uttar Pradesh. Prayagraj is also the original city of Tigmanshu. This thing is from 2003. After exactly 20 years, Tigmanshu is back in student politics with the web series ‘Garmi’. However, Hasil and Garmi have web series like ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Gangster’, ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ and ‘Tandav’ and ‘The Great Indian’ Murder. Although, all these stories are different, but the genre that connects them is the same. What is Garmi Web Series? All Tigmanshu films and serials get oxygen from crime and politics stories. The theme of the series ‘Garmi’ aired on Sony Liv is also the relationship between politics and crime. In the 9-episode series, Tigmanshu’s inspiration turns out to be his hometown and the university there, in which he gives the fictional name of Trivenipur University. Check out this post on Instagram A post shared by Sony LIV (@sonylivindia). Student union politics at Trivenipur University and its alliance with mainstream politics form the basis of Summer’s Tale. The series tells how Trivenipur University is like a laboratory for politicians, where students are groomed to become future leaders. But there is much more involved. Caste, religion and wealth are all important in politics, students start training for it at the university level. Teaching students of the...

Garmi Review

Of late, crime, politics, corruption and hate have been leaking out of every streaming platform. By the time Garmi drops, fatigue has already set in, observes Deepa Gahlot. For most directors, the first film must mean something special. But not everybody gets a chance to revisit it. Tigmanshu Dhulia's 2003 film Haasil took a look at campus politics in Uttar Pradesh. Twenty years later, he goes back to it in his Web series, Garmi. When Dhulia made Haasil, the idea was novel, the treatment was hard-hitting, the still raw actors (Jimmy Shergill, Hrishitaa Bhatt, Irrfan) worked well for the subject. Of late, crime, politics, corruption and hate have been leaking out of every streaming platform. By the time Garmi drops, fatigue has already set in. Arvind Shukla (Vyom Yadav), from a middle class Lalgunj family, is the hope of his parents and two sisters, that he will study political science at Trivenipur University, pass the UPSC entrance exam, get into the civil services and raise their standard of living. On his first day in the new town, he offers to pay the food bill of a man, and falls down a rabbit hole of casteist politics and unchecked anarchy. The stranger happens to be a follower of Bindu Singh (Puneet Singh), the charismatic president of the student union, and helps Arvind get a hostel room. This act of random kindness further entraps the earnest boy who only wants to study. The leader who controls the university, has already written his way into electoral politics in...

Garmi Review: Vyom Yadav makes it big in age

By Anindita Mukherjee: A small-town boy. A father who has great aspirations for his son. Ambitions, government exams, advent to township. College and student politics. Sounds familiar? That’s primarily the concept of Sony Liv’s new show, Garmi. Just when India is battling with unbearable garmi, the Tigmanshu Dhulia show near-perfectly depicts the weather and temperament of student politics. Starring Vyom Yadav as the protagonist, Garmi is an already explored genre of a small-towner making it big in college. However, has to walk through the fiery path of student politics. But is it worth your watch? Let’s find out. A reluctant Arvind Shukla (played by Vyom Yadav) doesn’t want to leave his hometown. All he wants is to stay within the comfort of his house and prepare for his government exams. But his ambitious dad has other plans and wants him to move out, explore a new town, shine at his college and prepare for UPSC. Fallen rebel Arvind gives in to his dad’s wishes and moves to Trivenipur for his college. But little did he know that his life is going to change forever. Good or bad, we’ll leave it to you to decide. Garmi is created and directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. And it has that Tigmanshu-touch from the very first scene. A middle-class setup, actors who aren’t quite the faces and realism. For instance, we might go to hotels and spend thousands on a soup but we continue to bargain with the hard-working vegetable seller for Rs 5. Relatable much? And of course, the biting trut...
