Garmin Forerunner 955 review

Whether you’re training for a marathon or a multi-day adventure, in this crowded market, finding the Garmin Forerunner 945 in the catalog of running watches from the brand. It’s been three years since the launch of the Forerunner 945, and Garmin has given its high-spec Forerunner a serious facelift. But how does it compare to some of the other best Garmin watches, in particular, the Garmin Fenix 7 and the Garmin Epix 2, which were also released this year? I’ve gone hands-on with the watch for the past few weeks to put it through its paces, and it’s an impressive gadget. Read our full Garmin Forerunner 955 review below to find out more. Garmin Forerunner 955 review: Price and availability • Garmin Forerunner 955 (Black) at Best Buy for $499.99 The Garmin Forerunner 955 was released in June 2022 and comes in two different versions: solar and non-solar. As its name suggests, the solar version of the watch has a Power Glass screen, which harnesses the power of the Sun to increase the watch’s battery life. Aside from this, the two versions are identical. Garmin Forerunner 955 review: Design As we saw with the Garmin Fenix 7 and the Garmin Epix 2, the Forerunner 955 now has the addition of a touchscreen. As I said in my review of the Garmin Fenix 7, this is normally a huge red running-watch-shaped flag for me, as I’ve never found touchscreens and sweaty fingers work well together. Thankfully, there are zero dependencies on the touchscreen with the Forerunner 955 and most of the ...

Garmin Vivoactive 4 Review

I'm PCMag's expert on fitness and smart home technology, and I've written more than 6,000 articles and reviews in the 10-plus years I've been here. I unbox, set up, test, and review a wide range of consumer tech products from my home in Florida, often with the help of my pitbull Bradley. I'm also a yoga instructor, and have been actively teaching group and private classes for nearly a decade. The 40mm model, somewhat confusingly named the Vivoactive 4S, is for wrists measuring 4.3 to 6.8 inches in circumference and comes ingold/pink, rose gold/white, silver/gray, or slate/black color options. The 45mm model, the Vivoactive 4, is for wrists 5.3 to 7.8 inches and comes in silver/gray or slate/black. Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated (Opens in a new window) & (Opens in a new window). Garmin sent me the rose gold/white 4S for this review, but I’ll refer to it as the Vivoactive 4, since the models are mostly identical aside from battery life, size, and weight. Garmin Vivosmart 5 review: fifth time’s the charm

I wanted to love the Garmin Vivosmart 4 back when it launched in 2018. It was a chic yet capable fitness band, with a great set of fitness tracking features for the price. It was almost perfect, except for one major flaw: the touchscreen. Swipes didn’t register like they were supposed to, and the capacitive button was even more finicky. So when I first unboxed the $149.99 Garmin Vivosmart 5, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. There, at the bottom of the display, was a beautiful, physical button. Adding a button might not seem like a game-changer, but in this case, it most certainly is. The Vivosmart lineup has always been plagued by unresponsive touchscreens. Sure, the Vivosmart 4 was an improvement on the Vivosmart 3, but it was still frustrating to use. Swipes wouldn’t register properly, and sometimes you ended up smacking your wrist just to start an activity. It’s the sort of annoyance that builds up over time until one day you just leave an otherwise excellent tracker to collect dust in a drawer. Like many of Garmin’s rugged GPS watches, the Vivosmart 5 uses a combination of a touchscreen and a physical button. That means you can swipe when it makes sense, like scrolling through menus. It also means you can reliably use the button to head back to the home screen and previous menus, as well as stop an activity. It’s intuitive to use and eliminates practically all the frustrations I’ve had with previous Vivosmart models. Also, it’s more satisfying to press a button and fe...

Garmin Forerunner 965 review: the ultimate running watch gets screen upgrade

The difference is night and day between the low-power LCD of the Forerunner 955 (left) and the bright and crisp OLED of the new 965 (right). Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian Other than the display, the 965 is almost functionally identical to the 955, which is a good thing. It has the same great combo of touchscreen and buttons in the same lightweight 52g frame, with a comfortable fit and water resistance to 50 metres. It is loaded with the same comprehensive sport and health tracking tools, capturing almost every metric during and after runs. The dual-band GPS is the most accurate available and the watch ships with onboard road, trail and topographic maps. Plus it has offline music options from Spotify, Amazon and Deezer. The 965 is ever so slightly wider and thicker than its predecessor, accommodating the larger OLED 1.4in screen, which is its killer feature. Maps and other information-dense features such as post-workout graphs are a lot clearer and more detailed on the 965’s screen compared to the 955. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian The screen is bright enough to see clearly in all light levels, automatically adjusting brightness to ambient conditions. It makes a huge difference for daily wearing. Watch faces are more detailed and attractive. The text of notifications, widgets and other data is easier to read. The clearer display is also big enough to fit more metrics on-screen during activities while keeping them intelligible at a glance, even in bright suns...
