I'm going to make it big: Geetanjali

RICHES TO RAGS: Geetanjali Nagpal ( TOI Photo ) Photographer Amir Rajpal, who worked extensively with Geetanjali Nagpal then, can't believe she has to live on the streets today. Photographer Amir Rajpal remembers shooting Geetanjali Nagpal for the first time some 14 years back. "I got a call from my niece who told me that Geetanjali had a very interesting face and would make for a good portfolio. When I first saw Geetanjali, she reminded me of Madhuri Dixit. She had lovely eyes, a beautiful body and a very good attitude. I have worked with many new models but there was something very interesting about this girl. She was hardly 20 at that time and was still studying. She was confident and very clear about what she wanted. In fact, a hello later, she told me, 'let's start working’." Geetanjali's pictures came out well and soon a leading magazine put her on its cover page. "I remember telling her then 'tum toh lambi race ki ghori ho’. " Geetanjali also worked with various designers of that time including Ritu Kumar, JJ Valaya and Jattinn Kochhar. "We had done a centre-spread for Femina in which Geetanjali modelled Ritu Kumar's clothes. From there on, whenever people would ask me for a beautiful face, I would recommend her name. I found her very warm," Rajpal says. A few years ago, Rajpal remembers meeting her in Goa. "I met her about four years ago in Goa. She was well dressed and looked happy. She told me she was doing lot of fashion assignments and was happy there. She told...

3 more weeks for Gitanjali in Vimhans

NEW DELHI: It was after three years that Gitanjali Nagpal was finally wanting to go home. On Friday, she appeared in a city court in a pretty pink salwar kameez with her mother, Santosh Nagpal. But, finally, she left alone. The court extended her stay at Vimhans by three weeks. She will be under the care of doctors till October 26 after which her future, hopefully, will become clear. "I am fine and happy. I want to be with my family now," said Gitanjali as she alighted from the car to appear before the judge, accompanied by people who had been her world for the past one month. With Vimhans’ Dr Jitendra Nagpal, head nurse, representatives of the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) and a couple of lady police attendants escorting her, Gitanjali looked fresh and prepared for life. Photographers wanted to capture Gitanjali and her mother in one frame but Santosh gave them the slip as she came in a separate car with a relative with her head covered. Gitanjali and her mother had a closed-door session before metropolitan magistrate Ravinder Bedi after which the judge had a long interaction with the mother alone. Nobody knew when Santosh went back as she left without meeting her daughter. "I had convinced her with great difficulty to come forward and decide on Gitanjali. But she was still unwilling. She seemed to be deeply hurt with what had happened to Gitanjali," said Barkha Singh, chairperson of DCW. But, Singh added, that Santosh has been asked by the judge to visit her daughter d...

Back in 2007, it was Geetanjali Nagpal who was in the headlines, and now in 2016, it is Mitali Sharma’s sad story that is being highlighted by the media. Oshiwara police found Sharma – whose career went into a downward spiral and parents abandoned her when she chose her acting career -begging and stealing on the roads of Lokhandwala, Bombay. Sharma is a resident of Delhi and was found by cops when she tried to smash a car window near a society in Oshiwara. She even assaulted 2 lady officers – pushed one and bit the other before they could control her. Sharma, who had acted in a Bhojpuri movie and bagged a couple of modelling assignments, went into a depression when her career stalled. Police said she must have been staying alone in Mumbai as nobody came to claim her and based on her condition, she could have been roaming the streets and not eaten anything for 2 days. Sharma demanded food after being caught. Nobody knows how and when she came to Mumbai, but as of now she has been sent to a mental asylum in Thane. Doctors say that since her admission, she has not spoken anything. Senior inspector Subhash Khanvilkar, Oshiwara said, “She is not in a normal state of mind. We are at present trying to locate her family.” Currently, Mitali Sharma is at the Thane Mental Hospital and is bei...

Former model found begging in Delhi

NEW DELHI: In a shocking incident in the Capital, former super model Geetanjali Nagpal was spotted in a south Delhi colony begging for alms to make ends meet. Soon after the news came to light that the shabbily dressed Nagpal was spotted in the Hauz Khas village area, the model went into hiding and was not traceable. Though there were reports that she was taken away by the police, the cops have denied any role in the incident. “We have nothing to do with the model because she is not a criminal and we have not received any complaint about her from the residents,” said Anil Shukla, deputy commissioner of police (south Delhi). The officer further said that according to police inputs, it seems that the model had started taking drugs. Nagpal is the daughter of a navy officer and had completed her schooling from Mount Carmel School. She then graduated from the prestigious Lady Sriram College. Soon after taking her bachelor’s degree, Nagpal pursued a course in fashion designing and also started modelling in the early ‘90s. The glamorous lifestyle ended soon as she failed to get modelling assignments after a while. Though the police and residents of the area did not knew the reasons that forced Nagpal to live on the streets of Delhi, it was discovered that she was in a live-in relation with a British national in Goa till recently. The whereabouts of that person was also not known.

Flashback for a model who fell off the catwalk

She was the model who seemed to have it all. When Gitanjali Nagpal purred down catwalks in the 1990s, surrounded by the beautiful people of Bollywood and bathed in the light of a thousand flashbulbs, it appeared as if anything was within her grasp. She had the looks, the style and the background to match. But she also had the ability to self-destruct. Falling into a vicious downward spiral of drink and drugs, the navy officer’s daughter ended up amid the rough and tumble of Delhi’s side streets. Her only accessory there was an open palm that begged for money. Now Ms Nagpal is back on the gossip pages of India’s newspapers, but for reasons other than she might prefer. A movie called Fashion that highlights the dark side of the industry and is allegedly partly based on her rise and fall, is due to open across the country this weekend and a debate has broken out over whether the 32-year-old former model is being further exploited. The controversy began last week when it was reported that the actress Kangana Ranaut had told an interviewer that her part in Fashion was based on the experiences of Ms Nagpal. This news was instantly seized upon by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), a group that had helped Ms Nagpal when she was discovered on the streets of the capital last year. Its chairwoman, Barkha Singh, made clear that they were not trying to ban the film outright but were concerned that the movie might portray the young woman in a bad way and that her recovery from a ment...

Poverty stricken model admitted to hospital

NEW DELHI: Former model Geetanjali Nagpal, found begging on the streets of this city, has been admitted to the VIMHANS hospital in Delhi. Nagpal, who is under the care of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), was admitted to VIMHANS late last night after taking permission from Metropolitan Magistrate at Karkardooma court here. "She is supposed to present herself before the court tomorrow, but it is unlikely that she would be able to do so given the state of her health. So the commission will seek more time for her appearance," DCW Chairperson Barkha Singh told the media. The ex-model was found begging in Hauz Khas by a photojournalist and seemed to have nowhere to go yesterday as her family disowned her. Government agencies floundered in finding a shelter for her and took hours to decide on how to rehabilitate her. Nagpal, 32, once walked the ramp for top designers and was a contemporary of the likes of Bollywood star Sushmita Sen. Don’t miss out on ET Prime stories! Model

New Delhi: The condition of former ramp model-turned begger Geetanjali Nagpal is improving says doctors at the Delhi Vimhans hospital where she is being treated free of cost, courtesy NGOs and Delhi Commission for Women. The former model was found begging on the streets and was aggressive initially when brought here. However, she has sobered down and hasn’t shown any symptoms of drug abuse, say doctors. "We haven't found any withdrawal symptoms linked to drug abuse in her. The blood reports also do not indicate anything like that," Nalnish of the Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (VIMHANS) was quoted by PTI. "Her diet and hygiene are being taken care of and she is also undergoing psychotherapy. Her condition is much better now," the doctor added. Geetanjali, diagnosed as suffering from fear psychosis, was reportedly informed about her German husband who wrote in an internet blog that he is willing to accept her back. The blog also carried earlier pictures of Geetanjali in her happy times with her supposed “family” and son. However the model refused to recognise or react to all such reports. "We are not taking up issues related to her past life with her and only talk about general matters like health conditions and hygiene," Nalnish said. Nagpal, who is under the care of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), was admitted to VIMHANS on September 3 with permission from the metropolitan magistrate at Karkardooma courts. She might remain in the hospital fo...
