HYDERABAD: Denizens are happy to forgo a good night's sleep and skip a meal just to reserve a place in the GHMC swimming pools this summer. Authorities at the various GHMC swimming pools in the city reveal that the craze for enrolment forms at these pools is such that people arrive as early as 3 am and wait in line for over two to three hours to ensure that they get one of the limited forms. The scene at the GHMC swimming pool in Ameerpet on Monday when the enrolment process started clearly reflected the great demand for pools this year. The men standing at the queue said they had arrived at 3 am for a form and the line reached all the way to the gate outside the complex. In the afternoon, it was women's turn. While the issuing of forms was scheduled for 4 pm, ladies queued up from 11 am itself. The scorching heat and the suffocating humidity did not seem to deter the nearly 200 Yezdani Taj, one of women in the queue said, "I came here with my daughter and we have been waiting for over two hours. Sometimes, people get into fights over the place in the queue. But I think it's worth the wait as the pool is indoors, well-maintained and the fee is affordable." Another lady who was first in the line said, "I came here a little before 11 am. I did not even have lunch." Prem Raj,

The civic body has 10 pools in Hyderabad, of which three are mini pools. And unlike last year, interested residents can enrol themselves through an online portal to avail of these facilities. The monthly fee is Rs.500 plus an additional Rs.10 for enrolment. The members can to avail of the pools for an hour per day. While the GHMC, till date, has had around 1,200 people enrol with it to use these pools, officials are hopeful of this count shooting up to 2,000 over the next few weeks. Also, officials said that they will be using granules imported from China, instead of chlorine, to clean the pools henceforth. “These granules clean the water more efficiently than chlorine. The granule balls absorb the dust and dissolve in water,” said S R Premraj, OSD (sports).

The pools are beautiful and well maintained. The trainers and staff are well behaved and professional. There is an Olympic sized swimming pool for swimmers and an indoor mini swimming pool for beginners. Trainers will train you to swim in the mini swimming pool first. To enter the bigger outdoor pool, you have to qualify a test under the trainer. Registration is through GHMC, sports website for 500 rupees a month per slot. 3pm to 4pm slot is exclusively for ladies and a lady trainer is available. All the remaining slots are for men. The only slot available for a woman is 3 - 4pm. i am a working woman and can only make is in the 5-6 pm slot. But women are not allowed in other slots sighting safety reasons and that men feel unconfortable. this is really discriminatory towards women in sports. And then they turn around and speculate that women are weak which is why they dont join sports as much. cant believe this is 2017!!
