Geetanjali Shree brought Hindi to a new position in the world with the Booker Prize

New Delhi, May 29 (PTI) In March, when “Tomb of Sand”, a translation of Gitanjali Shree’s Hindi novel “Reet Samadhi”, was included in the “long list” of 13 novels nominated for the International Booker Prize this year. If done, the number of people who knew this writer of Hindi outside the literary world was not very much. Now after being awarded the prestigious Booker Prize of the literary world, Gitanjali has become the center of discussion in the country and the world. Mr. himself was not giving much importance to the news when this Hindi achievement came under the media spotlight during the initial nominations for the Booker Prize. Geetanjali Shree: Delhi

Why a Hindi novel winning a Booker Prize is a big deal Novelist and short story writer Geetanjali Shree’s work, Ret Samadhi, translated into English as Tomb of Sand, is the first-ever Hindi novel to win the Man Booker's Prize A look at what it means for Hindi writers and translations At a ceremony in London on Thursday, the 64-year-old New Delhi-based writer said she was "completely overwhelmed" with the "bolt from the blue" as she accepted her 50,000-pound prize, and shared it with the book's English translator Daisy Rockwell. The prize is split between author and translator equally. ‘Tomb of Sand', originally ‘Ret Samadhi', is set in northern India and follows an 80-year-old woman in a tale the "I never dreamt of the Booker, I never thought I could. What a huge recognition, I'm amazed, delighted, honoured and humbled,” said Shree in her acceptance speech. "There is a melancholy satisfaction in the award going to it. ‘Ret Samadhi/Tomb of Sand' is an elegy for the world we inhabit, a lasting energy that retains hope in the face of impending doom. The Booker will surely take it to many more people than it would have reached otherwise, that should do the book no harm,” she said. Reflecting upon becoming the first work of fiction in Hindi to make the Booker cut, the author said it felt good to be the means of that happening. "But behind me and this book lies a rich and flourishing literary tradition in Hindi, and in other South Asian languages. World literature will be richer...
