IELTS Essay: The Role of Sports in Society

This is an IELTS writing task 2 sample answer essay on the topic of the role of sports in society and how important they are from the real IELTS exam. Please consider supporting me on Dave IELTS Essay: The Role of Sports in Society Some people think that sports play an important role in society. Others think they are nothing more than a leisure activity. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Many feel sports play an essential role in society while others believe they are simply for entertainment and relaxation. From my point of view, though their stated purpose is leisure, sports serve key social and psychological purposes. The claim that sports are largely just a leisure pastime is based on self-evident facts. Most people watch or participate in sports to release pressure and do not take them as seriously as other parts of life. For example, in England, football is the national sport and many individuals will play in amateur matches, follow their local team, and discuss sports with friends and family. Each of these activities can be broadly defined as a way of relaxing and a purposefully unproductive and enjoyable use of free time. If polled, the majority of individuals would state sports are an important yet entirely recreational part of their lives. Nonetheless, sports in fact play the essential role of satisfying a number of deep psychological needs. The average sports fan invests a tremendous amount of time and self-esteem in the success or failure of their team. ...

Why Do We Love Extreme Sports?

There’s a longstanding assumption behind most of the research on extreme athletes: “Clearly, something's wrong with them.” That’s what Eric Brymer, a researcher at Leeds Beckett in the UK, has seen for most of his career. Why else would anyone willingly participate in an activity that is quite literally defined by its high levels of perceived risk? What could motivate that kind of behavior? Extreme athletes, the academic literature suggested, are “adrenaline junkies” with “death wishes,” Brymer says. “They’re crazy people, not like normal people.” Motivation is a curious thing, especially when it comes to pastimes much of society thinks are dangerous. George Mallory’s response to that tired question— Why climb Everest?—is as telling as it is inscrutable. Many of us don’t have a better answer for why we want to conquer those rapids or nail that slab or bag that peak than Mallory’s “Because it’s there.” For the “normal people” who have no interest in paddling down waterfalls, it’s easy to see how the “death wish” narrative took hold. “It’s more than the quick hit of adrenaline. It’s personal.” Brymer was finishing his masters in sports psychology from the University of Liverpool 10 years ago and working at an adventure camp when he realized this view dominated the field. “I knew quite a lot of people participating in high levels of extreme sport—most people were very careful and took years to develop their skills,” he says. “I knew people who were highly, highly skilled at w...

⇉Dangerous Sport Should Be Banned? Essay Example

Summary The debate on whether the government should ban dangerous sports has gained momentum in recent times. While some people believe that individuals should have the freedom to participate in whatever sports they choose, others think that the government should prohibit high-risk sports to save lives and ensure equality for taxpayers. Those in favor of allowing dangerous sports argue that people have the right to decide what activities they want to engage in, and participating in sports that challenge their limits can broaden their horizons. On the other hand, those opposed to high-risk sports argue that banning them can limit fatalities associated with such activities and prevent taxpayers from incurring the cost of rescue and treatment. In conclusion, people should have the freedom to participate in sports of their interest, while the government should provide safety guidance to limit risks associated with such activities. Some people think government should ban dangerous sports, others; however, believe that people should have the freedom to do whatever sports they choose. Discuss. Today, an increasing amount of people take part in dangerous sports and some of them have lost their lives in these sports. It is maintained that Government should forbid people playing them, while others think people have a right to involve in sports of their choice. In fact, the issue needs some justifications. On the one hand, people definitely have their liberties to determine what spor...

IELTS Essay General Training: Children and Sports

This is an IELTS writign task 2 sample answer essay from the general training exam on the topic of whether or not children should do sports in order to grow up as healthy adults. Be sure to check out Dave IELTS Essay General Training: Children and Sports Some people believe that children should do sports so that they will grow up as healthy adults, but others feel sports are just about enjoying yourself. Discuss these both views and give your own opinion. Some feel that the primary reason young students should participate in sports is to establish healthy habits for adulthood, while others feel they are simply for fun. In my opinion, the later health benefits are an added bonus and sports are mainly an enjoyable pastime. Administrators who argue sports are a means of ensuring healthy future habits believe school must be efficient. Sports are therefore no different from normal subjects such as the sciences and humanities in that they offer potential future benefit. While athletics are unlikely to become a career, they can at least form the basis of a lasting passion for and understanding of physical fitness. Such fitness not only guarantees higher quality of life but will also likely have a concomitant effect on healthcare, allowing governments to redeploy finite resources into other vital sectors. Those who claim sports are simply for enjoyment argue that future aims should not be subordinate to the present moment. The entire purpose of education is to guarantee a higher s...
