Global Hunger Index (GHI)

What does this indicator tell us? The global hunger index is a means of monitoring whether countries are achieving hunger-related SDGs. It can be used for international ranking. How is it defined? The global hunger index captures three dimensions of hunger: insufficient availability of food, shortfalls in the nutritional status of children and child mortality (which is, to a large extent, attributable to undernutrition). Accordingly, the index includes three equally weighted indicators: the proportion of people who are food energy-deficient, as estimated by FAO; the prevalence of underweight in children aged under 5 years, as compiled by WHO; and the mortality rate of children aged under 5 years, as reported by UNICEF. A regression analysis of the global hunger index on GNI per capita is performed to identify countries that are notably better or worse off with regard to hunger and undernutrition than would be expected from their GNI per capita. Countries are ranked on a 100-point scale, with 0 and 100 being the best and worst possible scores, respectively. What are the consequences and implications? Hunger is one of the world's major problems and, therefore, one of its most important challenges. Hunger and undernourishment form a vicious circle, which is often "passed on" from generation to generation. The children of impoverished parents are often born underweight and are less resistant to disease; they grow up under conditions that impair their intellectual capacity for ...

The toxic cocktail of conflict, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic had already left millions exposed to food price shocks and vulnerable to further crises. Now the conflict in Ukraine—with its knock-on effects on global supplies of and prices for food, fertilizer, and fuel—is turning a crisis into a catastrophe. But the speed and severity of the global food crisis reflects the fact that millions of people were already living on the precarious edge of hunger—a legacy of past failures to build more just, sustainable, and resilient food systems. This year’s report therefore focuses on food systems transformation and local governance. According to the 2022 GHI, Hunger is at alarming levels in 5 countries—Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, and Yemen— and is provisionally considered *alarming *in 4 additional countries— Burundi, Somalia, South Sudan, and S...

2022 Global Hunger Index Results

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is an interactive tool created to represent, evaluate, and track hunger at global, regional, and national levels. Each year, scores are calculated to capture the multidimensionality of hunger using four combined indicators: undernourishment, child wasting, child stunting, and child mortality – to determine a value for each country. The data are standardized and aggregated to produce a 100-point GHI Severity Scale score where zero is the best – no hunger – and 100 is the worst. Data come from collection efforts by the United Nations and several other agencies, including the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Bank, and the United Nations Children’s Fund.
