We’d like to share another chosen essay from this year’s Bahçeşehir essay competition, on the topic of climate change. There were many fantastic entries across grades 9 and 10. Global warming refers to the phenomenon due to which the average global temperature rises by a few degrees over a specified period of time, or as the time passes. The concern that this raises is that if the temperature keeps on rising every few years or so, it is not hard to imagine what would be its effects to the global climate and environment over the next few decades. The rise of a few degrees in a few years is not much of an issue; however, if this rise is consistent, that is where the concern of most of the researchers and scientists lies. Natural climate change occurs when the processes of nature impact a certain region or the entire world and cause the climate change. There are many examples of the natural climate change. For example, when sunlight enters the realm of the earth and the energy, which comes with the sunlight, is absorbed by the earth, the earth warms up and this may be a cause for the natural change in the climate. However, the earth’s energy is balanced by other mechanisms, which means that the energy that the earth receives, it may discharge in other forms through other mechanisms. The net change in the climate which happens due to the naturally occurring phenomena is what is known as the natural climate change. Global warming is by far the major aspect that is blamed to be causing climate change. Global warming is described as the increase of the overall temperature on earth. This phenomenon has had considerable effects on the climate in several parts of the world. Global warming has several scientifically proven causes ranging from tectonic movements, green house gases and atmospheric conditions. Global warming is a phenomenon that occurs in a very interesting way. When the sun produces rays, some of it is trapped within the earth’s atmosphere. This retained heat, when in the right quantity, is good for survival of the living organisms on earth. But when too much of this heat is retained, it causes warming and this is what leads to climate change. The atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding the planet earth. (Heler & Zavaleta, 2009). These gases are the ones required for survival by most living organisms. However, some of these gases have a ‘blanket’ effect on the earth. They prevent the heat from leaving the earth thus causing an increase in temperatures across the globe. These gases have been popularly known as the ‘green house gases’. Global warming is not something to take lightly. The oceans are warming, the polar ice caps are melting, and greenhouse gas levels are at an all-time high. These are just some of the things that the claims-makers for the global warming cause have said. The science has proven them right. So, the ultimate claim is that humans are a large factor in the increased rate of global warming. There are claims-makers of all kinds fighting about whether that is true or not. The solutions proposed deal with a cleaner world, while the deniers will opt to do nothing. This issue has turned political, and it seems like nothing gets done until someone who believes in global warming is in charge. Right now, that is not the case. This issue will continue to get worse until there is no turning back. Hopefully society can come to a consensus to try and inhibit global warming. This is the only way to keep the place we live healthy.

Fossil fuels are a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. The burning of fossil fuels is the largest release that increases the temperatures of the world. The Earth’s temperature rises by the greenhouse gases that trap heat from the sun in the Earth’s atmosphere. Evidence has been collected and studied by scientists and engineers to prove that the world is warming and affecting the world (Shaftel par. 3). Earth-orbiting satellites have opened the eyes of scientists to the bigger picture of the effects of rising temperatures to the world. This has enabled scientists to collect many types of information about the climate on a global scale. In the mid-19th century, the heat-trapping of carbon dioxide was demonstrated. Tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and layers of sedimentary rocks are ancient evidence that can prove these rising temperatures over the years. “This ancient, or paleoclimate, evidence reveals that current warming is occurring roughly ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming” (Shaftel par. 5). These rising temperatures have largely affected the climate. “Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes are breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted, and trees are flowering sooner” (Shaftel par. 1). Introduction Global warming is the increase of average world temperatures as a result of what is known as the greenhouse effect. Certain gases in the atmosphere act like glass in a greenhouse, allowing sunlight through to heat the earth's surface but trapping the heat as it radiates back into space.
