Djokovic, Nadal, Federer: Who is the Tennis GOAT?

Greatest Player of all Time, or GOAT, in a sport is not an easy title to win. The recently deceased Pele has retained the title in football since the sixties of the last century, despite stiff competition from the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, and Neymar. And Micheal Jordan is still the biggest player in basketball even though he’s been retired for nearly two decades. So the current situation in tennis is exceptionally unusual, with the three top players in men’s tennis for the last two decades all having a claim to the GOAT title. Between them, this trio have won a total of 64 Grand Slams. Roger Federer retired last year with 20 Grand Slams under his belt, and Djokovic and Nadal both have 22. To put this into perspective, the former tennis GOAT, Peter Sampras, had 14, and before him, Bjorn Borg won only 11. The extraordinary and dramatic competition between these three rivals has contributed to tennis being extremely popular and attracting a wider audience as more video games are being released, as well as tennis-inspired online slots games which can be found in the gambling world. Now, although Roger Federer has retired and Rafael Nadal was forced out of this year’s Australian Open early due to injuries, debate about which of these three superstars truly deserves the tennis GOAT title rages on. To answer that question once and for all, a Reddit user has made and published a detailed list comparing the player’s statistics. There are thirty categories in all, including peak ELO...

Novak Djokovic: French Open winner says he's staying out the GOAT debate as he sets sights on Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic: French Open winner says he's staying out the GOAT debate as he sets sights on Wimbledon The new men's singles tennis world number one says it would be "disrespectful" to call himself the greatest tennis player of all time after securing a record 23rd Grand Slam because the way the sport is played has changed over the years. Novak Djokovic has said he will leave the debate as to whether he is the greatest tennis player of all time to others - after a record-breaking 23rd men's singles Grand Slam title. The 36-year-old Serbian beat Norway's Casper Ruud 7-6(1) 6-3 7-5 on Sunday in the French Open final to eclipse Spanish rival Rafael Nadal's 22 Grand Slam titles and extend his advantage over the now-retired Roger Federer, who won 20 majors. "I don't want to say that I am the greatest because I feel it's disrespectful towards all the great champions in different eras of our sport that was played in a completely different way than it is played [on Sunday]," Djokovic said afterwards. "So I leave those kind of discussions, of who is the greatest, to someone else. I have, of course, huge faith and confidence and belief in myself and for everything that I am and who I am and what I am capable of doing. "I feel incredibly proud, fulfilled. Of course the journey is still not over. I feel, if I'm winning slams, why even think about ending the career that already has been going on for 20 years?" Read more PARIS, June 11 (Reuters) - If the debate about the best-ever man to wield a tennis racket came down to statistics alone, Novak Djokovic's status as the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) would already be decided after he clinched a 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open on Sunday. The Serb beat Casper Ruud 7-6(1) 6-3 7-5 to eclipse Rafa Nadal's mark of 22 Grand Slam titles and extend his advantage over the now-retired Roger Federer, who won 20 majors. The trio have dominated men's tennis in the last two decades with a collective 65 Grand Slam titles and divide opinion among their loyal fanbases and analysts about who deserves to be known as the best of the lot. But it is Djokovic who is currently the last man standing among the "Big Three" with Nadal effectively out for the season following hip muscle surgery, although the Serbian played down the significance of his latest crown. "I don't want to say that I'm the greatest," Djokovic told reporters. "It's disrespectful towards great champions in other eras. Each great champion of his generation has left a huge mark and paved the way. "I leave these discussions to someone else." The 36-year-old won his first Grand Slam...

It has taken Does his “What does ‘the greatest’ mean? It’s hard to say because great can mean on the court, it can mean off the court, it can mean a lot of stuff. It’s just a matter of how you want to frame the question,” sports journalist and author Christopher Clarey , who has reported from more than 100 Grand Slams, told Al Jazeera. “But in a sense, in terms of results on the court, if you want to reduce it to that, I think Djokovic has got a really strong case.” The 36-year-old Serbian, the oldest man to win the French Open, refuses to be drawn into the discussion. “I don’t want to say that I am the greatest because I feel it’s disrespectful towards all the great champions in different eras of our sport that was played in a completely different way than it is played today,” Djokovic said after winning his third French Open title in Paris on Sunday.
