For Vraj Gopis, Krishna is in their souls and their mental faculties, in their life-breaths, their senses and their bodies, in external objects. The total love of these Gopis is seen, by their renouncing entirely all worldly things, everything that was theirs, and even their very Selves (Krishna alone becomes their self), made themselves a blank paper on which Hrishikesh (Lord of senses-Krishna) could write whatever He wished. Here with this surrendered attitude there was literally nothing left of the Gopis as persons- they had made themselves mere instruments for Krishna to do what He wished with. To Gopis, Krishna was the sole basis of their continued existence because Krishna was the only desire that remains for them and it is not overstating if we conclude that if this desire were not present, their very selves, their very existence would disappear. When we read, let us think that we are sitting in the assembly where Maharishi Shree Shukadeva is reciting Srimad-Bhägavatam to Maharaja Parikshith. The path of love (prem marg) of the Gopis is not the path of desire or worldly enjoyment but the path of renunciation and restraint, it is the path of sacrifice, patience and control of the senses. The Gopis experienced the “rasa” or the supreme bliss of Shree Krishna but they also had total control of their senses ( Indriya – nigraha ) and tolerance. True Love cannot survive without the highest and most desired virtue of Tolerance. In every relationship, whether it be worldly or spiritual, the one attribute to make the relationship successful, is tolerance. For example, Parents need forbearance and patience when they raise their children. At work, we need patience when dealing with our bosses and colleagues. At home we have to endure a lot to keep the love and harmony of the family unit intact. When walking the path of Bhakti, this same patience and tolerance needs to be developed to an extraordinary degree. The object of our love, our beloved Sri Krishna will test this forbearance and patience to a breaking point by his contrary behaviors. परंतु प्रियतम ! देखो तुम्हारी गोपियाँ, जिन्होंने तुम्हारे चरणों में ही अपने प्राण समर्पित कर रक्खे हैं, वन-वनमें भटककर तुम्हें ढूँढ़ रही हैं ॥ १ ॥ हमारे प्रेमपूर्ण हृदयके स्वामी ! हम तुम्हारी बिना मोलकी दासी हैं । तुम शरत्कालीन जलाशयमें सुन्दरसे-सुन्दर सरसिजकी कर्णिकाके सौन्दर्यको चुरानेवाले नेत्रोंसे हमें घायल कर चुके हो। हमारे मनोरथ पूर्ण करनेवाले प्राणेश्वर ! क्या नेत्रोंसे मारना वध नहीं है ? अस्त्रोंसे हत्या करना ही वध है ? ॥२॥ पुरुषशिरोमणे ! यमुनाजीके विषैले जलसे होनेवाली मृत्यु, अजगरके रूपमें खानेवाले अघासुर, इन्द्रकी वर्षा, आधी, बिजली, दावानल, वृषभासुर और व्योमासुर आदिसे एवं भिन्न-भिन्न अवसरोंपर सब प्रकारके भयोंसे तुमने बार-बार हमलोगोंकी रक्षा की है ॥ ३॥ तुम केवल यशोदानन्दन ही नहीं हो; समस्त शरीरधारियोंके हृदयमें रहनेवाले उनके साक्षी हो, अन्तर्यामी हो । सखे ! ब्रह्माजीकी प्रार्थनासे विश्वकी रक्षा करनेके लिये तुम यदुवंशमें अवतीर्ण हुए हो ॥ ४ ॥ अपने प्रेमियोंकी अभिलाषा पूर्ण करनेवालोंमें अग्रगण्य यदुवंशशिरोमणे! जो लोग जन्म-मृत्युरूप संसारके चक्करसे डरकर तुम्हारे चरणोंकी शरण ग्रहण करते हैं, उन्हें तुम्हारे करकमल अपनी छत्रछायामें लेकर अभय कर देते हैं। व्रजवासियोंके दुःख दूर करनेवाले वीरशिरोमणि श्यामसुन्दर ! तुम्हारी मन्द-मन्द मुसकानकी एक उज्ज्वल रेखा ही तुम्हारे प्रेमीजनोंके सारे मानमदको चूर-चूर कर देनेके लिये पर्याप्त है । हमारे प्यारे सखा ! हमसे रूठो मत, प्रेम करो। हम तो तुम्हारी दासी हैं, तुम्हारे चरणोंपर निछावर हैं। हम अबलाओंको अपना वह परम सुन्दर साँवला-साँवला मुखकमल दिखलाओ ॥६॥ तुम्हारे चरणकमल शरणागत प्राणियोंके सारे पापोंको नष्ट कर देते हैं। वे समस्त सौन्दर्य-माधुर...
