Rowlatt Act of 1919

In the year 1919, the British Government passed a new rule called Rowlatt Act, under which the Government had the authority and power to arrest people and keep them in prisons without any trial if they are suspected with the charge of terrorism. The government also earned the power to refrain the newspapers from reporting and printing news. The Act was ill famed as 'Black Act' by the people and Indians revolt in protest against the Rowlatt Act. The positive aspect of reform by British Government was subjected to severe sabotage by the Rowlatt act of 1919.The act was named after the recommendations made in the previous year to the Imperial Legislative Council by the Rowlatt Commission. The Rowlatt Commission was appointed to investigate the 'seditious conspiracy' of the Indian people. The Law passed empowered the Viceroy Government with extraordinary power to stop all violations by silencing the press, confining political activists without trial and arresting any individual suspected of sedition and treachery and arresting individuals without any warrant. A nationwide protest was raised by calling a Hartal (cessation of work). Mahatma Gandhi was extremely agitated by enactment of Rowlatt Act. He was extremely critical about the act and argued that everyone cannot be punished for isolated political crime. मुगल साम्राज्य से जब सता अंग्रेजों के हाथ में गई तो पहले अंग्रेजों का व्यापारिक उदेश्य था पर धीरे-धीरे उनका राजनैतिक रुप भी सामने नजर आने लगा। और वे अपने इस कुटिल चाल में कामयाब भी हो गये । धीरे -धीरे उनके क्रिया-कलापों के प्रति जनमानस में असंतोष की भावना पनपने लगी । इसी का परिणाम सन 1857 के सिपाही विद्रोह के रुप में दिखा। सन 1857 के विद्रोह के बाद जनमानस संगठित होने लगा औऱ अंग्रेजों के विरुद्ध लामबंद होने लगा। प्रबुद्ध लोगों औऱ आजादी के दीवानों द्वारा सन 1885 में भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस की स्थापना की गई। प्रारंभिक 20 वर्षों में 1885 से 1905 तक भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस पर उदारवादी नेताओ का दबदबा रहा। इसके बाद धीरे धीरे चरमपंथी (गरमदल) नेताओं के हाथों में बागडोर जाने लगी। इसी बीच महात्मा गांधी दक्षिण अफ्रीका से 9 जनवरी 1915 को स्वदेश (मुम्बई) में कदम रखा । तभी से हर साल 9 जनवरी को प्रवासी दिवस मनाते आ रहे हैं। जब गांधी जी स्वदेश आये तो उन्हे गोपाल कृष्ण गोखले ने सुझाव दिया कि आप देश में जगह-जगह भ्रमण कर देश की स्थिति का अवलोकन करें। अपने राजनैतिक गुरु गोपाल कृष्ण गोखले के सुझाव पर गांधीजी ने देश के विभिन्न क्षेत्रों से भ्रमण करते हुए बंगला के मशहुर लेखक रविनद्रनाथ टैगोर से मिलने शांति निकेतन पहुँचे। वही पर टैगोर ने सबसे पहले गांधी जी को महात्मा कहा था औऱ गांधी जी ने टैगोर को गुरु कहा था। गाँधी जी हमेशा थर्ड क्लास में यात्रा करते थे ताकि देश की वास्तविक स्थिति से अवगत हो सके। मई 1915 में गांधी जी ने अहमदाबाद के पास कोचरब में अपना आश्रम स्थापित किया लेकिन वहाँ प्लेग फैल जाने के कारण साबरमती क्षेत्र में आश्रम की स्थापना की। दिसम्बर 1915 में कांग्रेस के मुम्बई अधिवेशन में गा...
