GoPro Hero 10 Black Review: Our Favorite Action Camera Gets an Upgrade

The most remarkable thing about GoPro's new Hero 10 Black might be that it exists at all. Somehow, in the midst of a chip shortage that has trucks piling up in lots and supply chains breaking down across the industry, GoPro has managed to release a new camera in which the principal upgrade is a new processor. Also impressive is the extra performance GoPro has squeezed out of its existing image sensor with that beefier processor. The Hero 10 offers faster video—4K footage can now be shot at 120 frames per second, and 5.3K footage at 60 fps. The user interface is also snappier, the start-up time is shorter, and the onscreen menus are more responsive. The new processor is also capable of pulling higher-resolution still images out of your videos. All of your Hero 9 accessories will work with the Hero 10. Photograph: GoPro The Hero 10 Black is outwardly indistinguishable from its predecessor, other than the new blue logo. The enclosure, screens, lens, and image sensor are unchanged. It is marginally lighter (3 percent), which is nice. On paper, the Hero 10 might look a little disappointing, but GoPro's new processor, dubbed the GP2, brings some impressive enhancements to the Hero 10 that make it well worth the upgrade. The GP2 is the first upgrade to the GoPro's processor since the Hero 6 launched over four years ago. GoPro has put the extra processing power to work, making the Hero 10 do more with the same image sensor as the Hero 9. In addition to the improved frame rates for...

GoPro Hero 10 Black review: Fully evolved

The GoPro Hero 11 Black may have taken its flagship status, but the Hero 10 Black arguably offers better value for most people. If you don't need the vertical video and 10-bit recording offered by the Hero 11 Black, this offers most of the same features for less money. A more user-friendly and refined version of its predecessor, it offers snappier menus, new slow-mo frame rates and small image quality improvements over the Hero 9 Black, making it a really enjoyable waterproof companion for adventures and b-roll footage. Its rivals now offer larger sensors and lower price tags, though. Two-minute review The GoPro Hero 10 Black is now the middle child in GoPro's action cam family, following the launch of the Hero 11 Black. While this means it's missing a few features compared to GoPro's flagship – most notably an 8:7 sensor that's ideal for shooting vertical, TikTok-friendly videos – it's arguably now the sweet spot for value. The Despite its momentous name, the Hero 10 Black wasn't one of those GoPros that represented a big leap forward for the series. For example, we saw bigger step changes when the Instead, the Hero 10 Black refines (and fixes) most of the new features we saw on the Hero 9 Black, while adding a sprinkling of new shooting modes and better usability. This makes it the The Hero 10 Black is built around the same 23MP 1/2.3-inch sensor as its predecessor and is waterproof down to 10 meters. But it's that new GP2 processor that unlocks most its new talents. Chi...

GoPro Hero 10 Black review

Despite looking the same as its predecessor, the Hero 10 Black benefits from better performance across the board. Its frame rates are higher, its interface is smoother, its transfers are faster and its photos and videos look a touch more polished than those of the Hero 9 Black. While battery life has taken a hit when maxing out those shooting modes, between everything we’ve mentioned, as well as improved horizon leveling, and a much improved GoPro Quik app experience, there are fewer chinks in GoPro’s connected action cam armor than ever before. GoPro is the action cam industry leader, and the Hero 10 Black is GoPro’s new flagship for 2021. It brings back a familiar design and the same sensor introduced on the GoPro Hero 9 Black, however, this update brings with it a new processor. You might ask yourself – what difference is a processor going to make when it’s powering the same hardware? It turns out, in the Hero 10 Black’s case, the new GP2 processor makes a lot of difference. The Hero 10 Black can capture 5.3K resolution footage at up to 60fps, or 4K footage at 120fps – matching the Hasselblad tuned OnePlus 9 Pro at 4K resolution. It also boosts the flagship’s horizon leveling to 45 degrees, supports both wired and wireless transfer to your Android or iOS device, and captures better low-light photos and videos, according to GoPro. Perhaps the most exciting thing about the Hero 10 Black though is the promise of improved responsiveness when compared to the laggy Hero 9 Bla...

GoPro Hero 10 Black review: Pushing boundaries once again

Starting with the Hero 6 Black in 2017, GoPro switched to using its own custom processors in its cameras. The Hero 6 wasn't a complete overhaul from the Hero 5 Black, but the processor, the GP1, allowed GoPro to push the camera's resolution, frame rates and image stabilization to greater heights, which continued straight through to last year's fantastic Hero 9 Black. GoPro seemingly hit the ceiling on what the GP1 could do so, for the Hero 10 Black, it's on to the GP2. A processor upgrade in and of itself isn't going to be too exciting for most people. It's what the GP2 can do or, more to the point, what you'll be able to do with the Hero 10 because of the GP2 that's exciting. Let's start with resolutions and frame rates. With the Hero 10 Black you'll be able to shoot video at: GoPro also includes the option to shoot in 5K (30 or 60fps), 4K (60fps) and 2.7K (60 or 120fps) with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Why would you want that instead of 16:9? The taller frame lets you capture more vertically but also with such a high resolution, you can pull frames from the video for 19.6-megapixel photos from 5K 4:3 video. Frames from the 5.3K video will be 15.8 megapixels. You can just shoot photos, too, at 23 megapixels in JPEG or raw. With the Hero 9, I started shooting a lot more 4K video but I really wanted to shoot at 120fps. WIth the Hero 10, you can do that and the results are excellent. It's not great for battery life, and neither is the 5.3K at 60fps. But being able to slow down the a...
