Govardhan Puja is a Hindu ritual celebrated on the fourth day of the Diwali festival. It is celebrated a day after the Laxmi Puja or the Deepavali festival. This year, it falls on October 28, 2019. Diwali festival celebrations begin on Dhanteras, followed by Choti Diwali, Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. For the devotees of Lord Krishna, Govardhan Puja holds a special significance. Lord Krishna is also called Govardhan Dhari. There is a history behind Govardhan Puja. As per Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna saved the people of Braj, a place in Uttar Pradesh from the torrential rains by giving them shelter under the huge Govardhan hill, that he picked up on his little finger. On the auspicious day of Govardhan Puja, Lord Krishna and Govardhan Parwat are worshipped by the devotees. Gowardhan Puja is also referred to as Annakut Puja. Krishna spent most of his childhood in Shri Krishna, though being younger than almost everyone in the city, was respected by everyone due to his knowledge and immense power. So, the people of Gokul agreed with Shri Krishna's advice. Indra was angered upon seeing the villagers' devotion diverted away from him and toward Krishna. Indra decided to initiate thunderstorms and heavy rains in the city in reflex of his egoistic anger. To protect the people from the storms, Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on his little finger and provided shelter to all the people and cattle of the city. After 7–8 days of continuous storms, seeing the people of Gokul unaffected, Indra accepted defeat and stopped the storms.
