Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program

With just under 7% of the full-time federal workforce under the age of 30, executive branch agencies are working to meet this need, prioritizing the design and implementation of paid internship programs that provide students with valuable work experience, an expanded professional network, and a better understanding of the importance and impact of public service. Managed by the Partnership for Public Service, the Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program helps bring diverse young talent to government and offers students the opportunity to apply their educational training to work at a federal agency. Undergraduate, graduate and professional students from across all academic disciplines are welcome to apply. Open only to students from the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. Selected participants in the program will receive: • A 10-12 week fall internship at the Department of Transportation • Part-time interns (part-time defined as 20 hours/week) receive a stipend of $3,500 provided directly by the Schar School • Professional development sessions, including orientation and networking events throughout the fall. POSITION OVERVIEW The government affairs team is the partnership’s voice on capitol hill, working to advance the organization’s good government agenda by building bridges of understanding between federal agencies and congress, promoting useful technologies to improve federal service delivery, advocating for the modernization of America’s civil service system and sharing the partnership’s work with committees, members and their staff. Interns on the government affairs team will follow hill activity related to our core initiatives of civil service modernization and government reform, while helping deliver content to congressional staff and agency employees with the goal of improving understanding between branches of government. Interns will also assist with our initiative to strengthen congressional resiliency and restore congress as a co-equal branch of government. The government affairs team offers interns the opportunity to become more informed about the legislative process and the policies and practices of the federal government. The ideal candidate will have strong communication, teamwork and time management skills, flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, and a commitment to public service.
