What is Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month? Every year, during the month of June, people are encouraged to join together and celebrate the diversity and richness that Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities bring to the UK, as well as learn about Gypsies, Roma and Travellers are the largest ethnic minority community existing within the European Union with over 12 million people and some 300,000 living in the UK. This wonderful event not only celebrates diversity, but also recognises prejudice and marginalisation. Despite living and working throughout Britain for as long as 500 years, their history and culture is largely absent from British history and this inclusive event aims to address this absence and encourage deeper understandings relating to these communities by raising awareness. This wonderful event is a great opportunity to develop understanding in young children and promote inclusivity and diversity. What is the purpose of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month? Due to a lack of understanding about their way of life, Gypsies, Roma and Travellers have often suffered prejudice and persecution. Gypsy Roma and Traveller History Month (GRTHM) was established in Britain in 2008 as a way of raising awareness of these communities and their contributions to society, and to offset negative stereotyping and prejudices. The aims of the GRTHM are to: • Promote knowledge of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History, Cultural and Heritage • Disseminate information on positive Gypsy, Roma and Traveller contributions to British Society • Heighten the confidence and awareness of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people to their cultural heritage • Celebrate Gypsy, Roma and Traveller culture and heritage For Gypsy, Roma, Traveller History Month (GRTHM) this year, the Traveller Movement are running a social media campaign focussing on the History you remember, the memories and stories that your Grandparents told you!
