Gudakesh Motie Breaks 73

With 7-37 and 6-62 in each innings, Gudakesh Motie spun the West Indies to a Test – and series – win against Zimbabwe in his third Test match appearance. He rewrote several records en route. After a draw in the first Test match at the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo, the West Indies won the second Test at the same venue to take the two-match series 1-0. The tourists had taken control on the first day, when Motie (7-37) bowled out Zimbabwe for 115, their second-lowest score against the West Indies on home soil. Their previous lowest was when they were bowled out for 104 in 2003/04. At 40.5 overs, it was the shortest Test innings for Zimbabwe against the West Indies, home or away. They lasted five balls fewer than the 41.4 overs at Bridgetown in 2012/13. Motie finished with 7-37, the sixth-best figures by a West Indian spinner. Interestingly, while three of the top five are from 1970/71 or before, the other two – Devendra Bishoo’s 8-49 in 2016/17 and Roston Chase’s 8-60 in 2018/19 – came in the last six years. This was also the first time a West Indian bowler – spinner or otherwise – took a seven-wicket haul against Zimbabwe. Motie improved on Shane Shillingford’s record of 6-49 from the aforementioned 2012/13 Test match. The West Indies rode on fifties from Raymon Reifer (53) and Chase (70) to respond with 292 as Victor Nyauchi (5-56) took his maiden five-wicket haul. Zimbabwe reached 56-2 in response before collapsing to Motie for a second time, for 173. The only resistanc...

Keemo Paul and Gudakesh Motie named in West Indies squad for World Cup Qualifier

Apart from Powell, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Nicholas Pooran, Romario Shepherd and Paul are the others from West Indies' IPL contingent who are part of the World Cup Qualifier squad. All of them have been given permission to return to the Caribbean for a short break before arriving in Zimbabwe. "We see this as a crucial tournament as we look to secure one of the two places left in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 in India," Haynes said. "Therefore, we have selected a balanced team which we believe is well-equipped to get the job done in the conditions we anticipate in Zimbabwe. It will be a challenging tournament, it will be intense and competitive, there is no doubt about that. In speaking to the players, they are fully aware of the job at hand. We are happy with the preparations and the mindset of the players, and everyone is clear about their roles in the squad.

West Indies announce squads for UAE ODIs, World Cup Qualifier

West Indies on Friday named Keemo Paul and Gudakesh Motie while leaving out Shimron Hetmyer in their squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier as well as for a preceding ODI series in the UAE. Besides all-rounder Paul and left-arm spinner Motie, an official release from Cricket West Indies (CWI) also named four uncapped players — left-handed batter Alick Athanaze, as well as all-rounders Kavem Hodge, Dominic Drakes, and Akeem Jordan — for the UAE trip. West Indies play three ODIs against the UAE in Sharjah in the first week of June to prepare for the World Cup Qualifier that takes place in Zimbabwe between 18 June and 9 July. West Indies cruise to victory over UAE in first ODI UAE vs WI: King, Charles star as West Indies thrash hosts by 78 runs “Paul is a three-dimensional player, who can bowl the new ball effectively, he’s dynamic in the outfield and he can also make vital runs. He is now fully recovered from injury and with his skill-set we see him as a potential match-winner for us. “Motie was excellent in the Test matches in the Zimbabwe earlier this year, where he took 19 wickets, and we anticipate similar conditions for the qualifiers,” West Indies chief selector Desmond Haynes was quoted as saying in the release. “We see this as a crucial tournament as we look to secure one of the two places left in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Therefore, we have selected a balanced team which we believe is well equipped to get the job done in the conditions we...

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Spinner Gudakesh Motie set a new benchmark for West Indies cricket with the best return from a test spinner as he bowled his side to victory, and series success over Zimbabwe, by an innings and four runs in the second test on Tuesday. It was the best ever test match performance by a spinner for the West Indies as Motie took 13-99 in the match, surpassing a mark that had stood for seven decades. The West Indies made sure of the win at Queens Sports Club inside three days after drawing last week's first test, also played in Bulawayo. The left-arm spinner returned figures of 7-37 as Zimbabwe, who won the toss and elected to bat, were skittled out for 115 in their first innings. The West Indies replied with 292, adding two runs to their overnight score as they lost their last two wickets when play got underway belatedly on Tuesday because of a rain delay. Motie returned to torment the home side and finished with 6-62 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 173 just after tea in their second innings, four runs short of forcing West Indies to bat again. Only captain Craig Ervine, who scored 72, offered any resistance but when he was trapped lbw at the start of the last session, the test was effectively over. "I was very happy about it," said Motie of his performance as he was named man of the series. "I worked hard enough. I had a lot of practice and back in my country, the wickets are similar." added the 27-year-old from Guyana, playing only his t...
