H3N2: Flu Statistics, Symptoms, Vaccine, Treatment & More

We all know that time of year. As the weather begins to cool, cases of the flu begin to rise, and the flu season begins. The Influenza A viruses are further divided into different subtypes based on two proteins found on the surface of the virus — hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). There are 18 different subtypes of HA, which are numbered H1 through H18. Similarly, there are 11 different subtypes of NA, numbered N1 through N11. Influenza A viruses are classified according to both their HA and NA subtypes. Some influenza A subtypes that you may be familiar with include Let’s take a closer look at H3N2 influenza viruses. Flu caused by H3N2 viruses predominated during the 2017/18 flu season. Typically, flu seasons that are dominated by H3N2 activity are more severe, particularly among at-risk groups such as Data for the 2017/18 flu season indicated that there were In comparison, there were Additionally, the When broken down by virus, the vaccine was 65 percent effective against H1N1, 25 percent effective against H3N2, and 49 percent effective against influenza B. The H3N2 virus was first discovered in humans in 1968. In a after a person contracts the virus. In other words, the antibodies won’t help prevent viral infection. The researchers noted that H3N2 strains have evolved dramatically since people born in the late 1960s and 1970s first encountered the virus as children. This helps explain their immune response. Each year, the annual flu vaccine protects against eith...

Influenza A (H3N2) variant virus

On 13 January, 2021, a child under 18 years of age in Wisconsin developed respiratory disease. A respiratory specimen was collected on 14 January. Real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing conducted at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene indicated a presumptive positive influenza A(H3N2) variant virus infection. The specimen was forwarded to the Influenza Division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on 21 January for further testing. On 22 January, CDC confirmed an influenza A (H3N2)v virus infection using RT-PCR and genome sequence analysis. Investigation into the source of the infection has been completed and revealed that the child lives on a farm with swine present. Sampling of the swine on the property for influenza virus has not yet been conducted but is planned. Five family members of the patient reported respiratory illness during the investigation and were tested for influenza; all tested negative. The patient was prescribed antiviral treatment and was not hospitalized and has made a full recovery. No human to human transmission has been identified associated with this investigation. Sequencing of the virus by CDC revealed it is similar to A (H3N2) viruses circulating in swine in the mid-western United States during 2019-2020. Viruses related to this A (H3N2)v virus were previously circulating as human seasonal A (H3N2) viruses until around 2010-2011 when they entered the USA swine population. Thus, past v...

H3N2 is combination of the two words, H means hemagglutinin and N means neuraminidase. hemagglutinin=a substance, such as a viral protein, which causes haemagglutination. neuraminidase=an enzyme, present in many pathogenic or symbiotic microorganisms, which catalyses the breakdown of glycosides containing neuraminic acid. 2 WHAT IS H3N2 HOW DOES IT EFFECT THE PEOPLE Indian independence anniversary celebration and unity.
