New Zealand vs Sri Lanka

The skies monochrome and heavy like a wet blanket that is about to be applied to the series at the first opportunity. The pitch so flush with vegetation, woodland creatures have taken residence. The outfield damp, as a cold drizzle descends occasionally on biting winds. And while the local bowlers - all tall and strapping - are lithe and powerful in their warm-up overs on the practice pitches, Sri Lanka batters swaddled in woollen sweaters face throwdowns, bearing the air of soon-to-be human sacrifices on an altar of seam bowling. And then, this. Four years after they had last played a Test in New Zealand (megaspanked by 423 runs, at this very venue), here was a day of astoundingly non-trash batting. Of gloriously semi-decent defensive play, of gobsmackingly okayish technique. Had Sri Lanka's batters done the work to figure out the whereabouts of their off stump before they started a Test on foreign soil? The mere thought should bring a tear of pure pride to the eyes of any Sri Lanka fan. Their scoring areas were diverse, but almost all of Sri Lanka's top-seven batters covered the stumps, declined to lunge at balls until they were set, were unperturbed by the deliveries that beat their bats, and did not follow seaming balls outside their stumps. Collectively, they refused to collapse even in the face of probing bowling (mostly from Tim Southee and Matt Henry), as they often have in seaming conditions. Given the long tail, and the lack of experience in Sri Lanka's attack (w...

Hagley Oval (Christchurch)

Once you figure out parking, this is a great spot to watch the cricket on a proper cricket ground - and it now has lights! Plenty of space to put your chair on the bank and enjoy the game. Went to an evening game and there was a great activity organised for the kids. Food and drink is extremely expensive, but no different to any other sports stadium in that respect. My wife and I watched the deciding 50 over game between the Black Caps and England - the weather was perfect and they knew it was going to be a sell out crowd. We arrived in plenty of time but were greeted by MASSIVE slow moving queues to get through security checks. It was as though they had only expected a few people to turn up. We joined the queues, and consequently missed the first few over of the Kiwi innings - as did hundreds of other people. To compound the annoyance, the 'security checks' were a joke - all they seemed concerned with was making sure people didn't take any liquids in (loads for sale inside though!) Once were were in it was a great day, the crowd were great the cricket was first class and the whole atmosphere made the hassle worthwhile. One other slight moan - I wasn't impressed with the scoreboard - too small, too little information about the game on it, and why only have one? If there was a second one on our side of the ground we would have been much better informed. I don't like to moan, and would certainly recommend Hagley Park as a fabulous place to watch cricket - just make sure you ...
