If you grew up in Mumbai, Bandra to be precise, chances are that the name Brian Tellis will ring a bell and perhaps even bring a smile to your face. You’ve either seen him on the stage as a singer, theater artist or host, or probably heard his unmistakable baritone voice on the radio. Many may know him as an inspiring entrepreneur in the live entertainment industry. He says, “I started my career actually working in a pharmaceutical, believe it or not!” In his early twenties, Tellis was eager to travel the world and the only way for him to do that at the time was to work with an airline or be a general sales agent (GSA). “I spent some time looking around and then there was an opening in a company called Pan Tours, which was the sales agent for Pan American so I started off there.” Tellis went on to have stints in Air Canada and Air France in their sales and accounting departments and spent the better part of a decade in the airline industry which laid the foundation for what was to come from him. The performing arts bug Before we go forward in the life of Tellis, we first need to go back and get a sense of how and why he’s been so versatile over the years. The Bandra boy immediately points out that it all stems from the fact that he’s always had the performing arts needle stuck in his vein. “I can’t get it out,” he sa...

An Extraordinary Tiger Man: Hans Dalal

This Tiger conservationist is no ordinary. Hans Dalal, was born with Cerebral Palsy, a neurological disorder which impacts one’s fine motor skills. The Man with Cerebral Palsy Who Is Fighting to Save Tigers

Hans Dalal was born with cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder caused due to brain malformation in the early stages of birth. The disorder affected his movement; he only learned to walk at the age of six and even then, found it difficult to maintain his balance and move freely. He also developed severe speech impairment. Although cerebral palsy is an incurable disease, physical and occupational therapies have been known to benefit many who suffer from the disorder. On the insistence of his mother and doctors, Hans underwent a combination of physical, occupational and speech therapies. It helped him gain greater control over his limbs and his speech, giving him the chance to lead a relatively normal childhood. Despite this however, Hans was often the victim of unjustified social stigma. Hans Dalal Image Source: Society finds it difficult to accept anyone who deviates even slightly from what is perceived to be the ‘accepted normal,’ and Hans, who walks and talks the way he does, knows this only too well. He has been offered a wheelchair at airports several times, despite never having asked for it. His lack of balance while walking often leads people to think of him as a disorderly drunk. A mother once even pulled her daughter closer to herself and away from Hans as he walked by. As a child, he wasn’t allowed on school trips because his teachers were worried about him losing his balance and hurting himself. His uncle, however, came to his rescue. He would set off with Hans ...

Waghdoh, who sired at least 40 Tadoba tigers, found dead

For the last 15 days, the old tiger was found moving sluggishly and had virtually given up on life. Waghdoh was frequently spotted in the Sinhala forest by locals and his videos of ill health had also gone viral on social media. On May 21, the tiger is suspected to have killed shepherd Dashrath Pendor (65). Waghdoh got his name from a waterhole in the core area of Mohurli range, where the tiger was first sighted by tourists in 2009, when he was around four years old. “I had first seen Waghdoh in 2009, when it was also known as Waghdoh shot into the limelight after he trounced Yeda Anna (Broken Tail) in 2010, the then dominant male of Mohurli. Waghdoh also killed three cubs of tigress Madhuri’s first litter sired by Yeda Anna. Waghdoh later mated with her to have his own cubs. Madhuri’s second litter of four cubs in 2011 was also sired by Waghdoh. This litter was popularly known as the Tiger Sisters of Telia — Sonam, Lara, Geeta, and Mona. A documentary was also produced on the Telia sisters, which became very popular. Lara and Sonam still dominate the Mohurli range with three cubs each. “Most of the tiger lineage you see in “In 2015, when Madhuri was ousted by her own daughter Sonam, and she moved to Agarzari-Dewada in Mohurli’s buffer. At the same time, Waghdoh too was ousted by Bajrang (T49). Today, the flourishing tiger population there with popular tigresses like Chhoti Madhu, Sharmili, Aishwarya, W female, Collarwali are credited to Waghdoh,” says naturalist Himanshu ...
